These songs on my first album have been with me for a long time, some of them since childhood. The soundtrack of my life has been formed by a mixture of hymns, carols, traditional ballads and songs by known writers, contemporary and not. I have written a handful of songs myself and include three of them here, including my most popular song, "The Wallflower Waltz" and the contemporary sea shanty, "Morning Shanty."
I favor a spare style of accompaniment, except when I desire full vocal harmony. You will find a capella tracks ("Morning Shanty," "Little Sadie, "Barbara Allen"), a Joni Mitchell track with banjo and guitar, a waltz with guitar and fiddle, guitar and concertina on the title track. I wanted the album to sound like I sound when I sing, rather than employing a lot of fancy tricks.
