Album Notes

THE STAN LAURELS

The Stan Laurels are an indie psyche-pop/rock band based in Austin, TX who seamlessly blend the super-melodic pop sensibilities of the mid/late 60s with the fantastical (and sometimes absurd) themes and non-standard song structures of early 70s progressive rock, then add a sizeable helping of psychedelia, and throw in a twist of classical for good measure. Influences of The Beatles, The Zombies, The Flaming Lips, Yes, and Brian Wilson can definitely be detected, yet the music is a wholly unique and original sound. Oh, and by the way, all of the lush, multi-layered soundscapes of The Stan Laurels are created by one person, John Lathrop. The listening experience could be classified as “The scientifically engineered combination of everything and nothing you’ve ever heard.”

DEATH OF THE SUN

"Death of the Sun" is the debut LP from The Stan Laurels. Clocking in at nearly 60 minutes, "Death of the Sun" is a 100% original, full-blown concept album in the classic genre of “boy meets girl/boy gets abducted by aliens.” Paul Reubens had this to say about “Death of the Sun” and The Stan Laurels: The universe's rockiest roller coaster has ridden at the speed of sound through kaleidoscopic rainbows in the X-Quad-9 Galaxy for seven eternities. On that roller coaster, you will find a smattering of Sasquatch, ring-tailed lemurs, Horatio Spatula (the inventor of the almighty spatula), a couple of Gryphons, David Hasselhoff, and at least one being from the planet Retardiculous, all making sweet love to each other. The younglings that hatch from this pungent love-fest are the songs of The Stan Laurels.

REVIEWS

Melodic, intriguing, and original!

The Stan Laurels shine in their debut album and leave us wanting more. The music is a combination of The Beatles, The Flaming Lips, Yes, and The Zombies, but done in such a way that the end result is a unique and fresh sound that is complex and effortless at the same time. The fusion of the songs "Death of the Sun" and "Never Mind" exemplify this beautifully. And the melodic structures of "Samaanya," "Othello's Waltz," and "Darkening Skies" are absolutely enticing. The Stan Laurels conclude their musical adventure with one of the most haunting songs of the entire album - "Lullaby of Awakening." This is an unexpected surprise reminiscent of the Santo & Johnny sound that is sure to keep the listener captivated and wishing for more. Few would dare attempt a concept album as their first musical venture, but The Stan Laurels have succeeded and excelled.
