Born in New York City in 1941, Steve Kahn and spent his early years in Croton-on-the Hudson, New York. His mother was a sculptress who later became an accomplished author. His father was Albert E. Kahn, an American dissident, author, photographer and journalist who was blacklisted during the McCarthy era.
In the mid-fifties, Steve’s family moved to the Sonoma Valley in California. Steve grew up in the valley, and many of his songs are based there as well as the Western United States. He now lives in the California’s Central Valley and also spends time at a small family cabin on the Montana/Idaho border.
Steve was active in the San Francisco civil rights sit-ins and was arrested on numerous occasions. He was involved in organizing resistance against the War in Vietnam. He has traveled extensively in the US and Europe.
Steve worked in a wide-ranging variety of jobs in the Western states, and his songs are drawn directly from his life and travels, songs written to honor the lives, loves and struggles of many different kinds of people he has been honored to meet. Steve has shared the stage with Kate Wolf, Hugh Shacklett, Don Coffin, Holdstock and MacLeod and other performers.
This is his first album.
