Album Notes

Sugarbeach’s latest album begins with a bear hug set to music. A strong, reassuring voice emerges from groovy electronic funk to let you know, in no uncertain terms, that if you’re a young gay person in this world today you are simply not alone. In fact, as the album cover symbolizes, the whole gay community is standing right behind you and all you need to do, if you don’t believe them, is take your head out of your hands, stand up, turn around, and accept its smotherly love. Like much of the album, the title track Not Deserted is a few fabulous minutes of weighty, meaningful lyrics set to uplifting, celebratory music and every word counts. Sugarbeach want them to count. The song emerged from the band’s hearing of the recent suicide of 11 year old Carl Joseph Hoover as a result of anti-gay bullying. The vocals articulately state what every gay person should embrace as their daily mantra: “You are powerful, you are perfect, you can steer”. And just when you can’t imagine these women could squeeze you any tighter or make you feel any better about yourself, Sugarbeach hold you out at arm’s length, look you right in the eye, and spell out your worth: “God’s got enough angels. We need you here”.
