Album Notes

Sundar's vocal style is influenced by great singers like Chet Baker, Tony Bennett, Johnny Hartman, Kurt Elling, Art Garfunkle, Billy Eckstine, Gordon Lightfoot, A.C Jobim and Frank Sinatra. Equally proficient on saxophone, his approach recalls the sound and style of Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Joe Lovano, Paul Gonsalves, Johnny Hodges and Stan Getz. The Sundar Quartet presents a perfect balance of the traditional and modern interpretation of the jazz standard, via clever arrangements by the leader. Sundar has performed in Canada, Europe, Africa, Japan, India, USA and the Caribbean in venues that include the North Sea Jazz Festival (Rotterdam), the New Morning Jazz Club (Paris), Vienne Jazz Festival (France), Blue Note Jazz Festival (Belgium), Blue Note (NYC), Birdland (NYC), U Muniaka Club (Poland), Shinjiku Pit Inn (Japan), Rex Hotel (Toronto), Beat Niq (Calgary) and Harbourfront (Toronto).

Sundar brings back the soul of the standard
author: Benjamin Drazen
Its been a long time since a vocalist has captured the real essence and meaning of the American Songbook. Sundars soulful and often sultry voice brings you deep into the heart of a standard. On top of that he is a melodic and virtuosic jazz improviser on alto sax. His renditions of Easy Living and Waltz For Debby were especially tender and joyful. Sundars renditions are always swinging and will leave you in great anticipation of his next release!
