The title track “Pieces of Rain” was inspired by the devastating storms that hit Newcastle in June 2007. The storm was so ferocious that a coal freighter was washed ashore on to a local beach, and much of the city was blacked out for days. Many residents were severely flooded, with some losing everything. Pieces of Rain was my attempt to understand the helplessness of the storm’s victims – to be trapped in your home, water rising all around you, and knowing there was nothing you could do….except hope.
People sometimes ask me why I occasionally play or write sad music. The best answer lies in something that happened to me earlier this year:
A few weeks ago, I was playing piano in a restaurant when an elderly lady pulled up a chair next to me and asked me to play her a song. Halfway through it, I glanced over to her and saw tears streaming from her saddened eyes. I leant over and apologised for upsetting her. She turned to me, mustered what she could of a smile and said “Thank you. You’ve made me feel exactly as I want to feel”.
It is a musician’s role to inspire imagination, conjure up memories, and evoke a spectrum of emotions. Sometimes these emotions will be positive, and sometimes they won’t…but as long as the listener feels something, the musician has done their job.
“…I made a little old woman cry…and it made me a better person.”
