After releasing two previous solo EP’s, Tom Butwin is now making his first release with The Tom Butwin Band. While much of the material is shared between Tom’s solo project and band, multi-instrumentalists David Dionise and John Garland bring new perspectives to the music and expand it beyond the usual singer/songwriter genre it is categorized in.
This live recording really highlights The Tom Butwin Band’s versatility. While the group usually plays in a four-piece format that features Tom on electric guitar and Jon Gewirtz on saxophone (who doesn’t appear on this recording), “Live & Acoustic-12.27.08” is a strict departure from that setting.
David Dionise leaves the comfort of his drum kit to spend most of the recording on piano, while John Garland migrates away from the electric bass to other acoustic instruments that include upright bass and mandolin. Additionally, Tom Butwin’s strong and expressive vocals are particularly noticeable in this stripped down setting and the use of a 12-string guitar on “Torn” is a unique instrumentation change that fans haven’t seen before.
The recording also features a special cover of the Motown hit, “I Want You Back,” as made famous by the Jackson 5.
