Hearts + Minds is the new release from Portland, Oregon rockers Trick Sensei. On the new record the band combines elements of trippy pop, jangly indie rock, noisy, distortion-heavy guitar rock and danceable psychedlelia under rain-drenched melodies about love, pain and freedom. Jeremy Gordon, Andres Caputo and Joshua Boyd switch off vocal melodies and harmonies throughout.
The band’s sound is characterized by Gordon and Caputo’s interplaying guitars, melodic bass lines by Gerald del Campo, and moments of mind-bending swirl. Loose and playful rhythms transform into tight, repetitive drones, and back again.
The album opens with a simple 4 note melody played on a theremin echoed on guitar leading into “Lost Dog,” a straight-forward rock number that dissolves into an orchestra of pitch bending synthesizers, guitars, and theremin. Other highlights include the reverb-soaked “Burnt,” sing-a-long “The Wilderness,” rockers “Straight2myhead” and “Let’s Not F* Ourselves So Badly This Time,” and the catchy escape themed closer “Disappearing Act.”
