Rooted in jazz traditions, immersed in Brazilian grooves and odd meters, "Cave Dwellers" is Trio Subtonic's latest foray across genres, captivating audiences with an original yet all too familiar sound. Featuring piano and keyboards, upright bass, and drums, apt descriptions such as groove, bossa-surf, funk, mood, and experimental jazz all fit – and Trio Subtonic exhibits them with a flourish. Willamette Week described Trio Subtonic's music as "truly hypnotic compositions… make no mistake: this is complex stuff and when it's pulled off with this kind of ease, it's easy to get lost in the melodies."
It all began as a collaboration between keyboardist/composer Galen Clark and drummer/percussionist Jesse Brooke, who both spent the winter of 2005 traveling in Brazil. The two returned to Portland and formed Trio Subtonic, eventually adding Bill Athens to the line-up. Their goal was simple: have fun, make music they love, and blend all their favorite genres to taste, with a proclivity to groove. And on their sophomore album, "Cave Dwellers", the band feels they have done this and more. "This record is Trio Subtonic like you've never heard it before. From recording with Nick Moon in a beautiful studio [Big Red Studios] to the attention to nuance in the arrangements," comments Jesse Brooke. "It's almost hyper-real. Of course we love playing this music live, so it's always changing. But I feel this was a good snapshot of the band in its prime." Honing their style and sound after tours along the West and East Coasts, "Cave Dwellers" is the result of their consistent show schedule and commitment to original hard-hitting jazz.
