Album Notes

Nuevo Russian-Romany (Gypsy) music and dance ensemble
The Romany (Gypsy) musical legacy is most notably characterized by its clever synthesis of known musical genres with the lesser known or unknown. Via Romen is the embodiment of this legacy, of lacing tradition with novelty and offering unprecedented interpretations of that which we already know. Their music and dances, rooted in Russian-Romany tradition, enchant audiences with intricate improvisations, catchy tunes, and flashy footwork.

Founded in 2004, Via Romen has performed to glowing reviews across North America and has established itself as the continent’s premier Russian-Romany (Gypsy) group.

Nuevo Russian–Romany Music is a new style, the original creation of Via Romen members. Drawn from a vast repertoire originating in Eastern and Western Europe and enriched by jazz, Jewish, and Latino styles, this music is modern, innovative, fresh and often deeply emotional.

The Via Romen band consists of Vadim Kolpakov (Russian seven-string guitar, dance and vocals), Arkadiy Gips (violin and backup vocals), Alex Gorodezky (six-string guitar and bass), and Petra Gelbart (vocals, accordion and dance). In addition, Via Romen features dancer and choreographer Marina Shanefelter and other guest artists.

Two of the performers, Vadim Kolpakov and Arkadiy Gips, were part of Madonna’s “Sticky & Sweet” 2008/2009 world tour as members of the Kolpakov Trio.

About the CD:
My Two Homes is about the musical and life experience of two hemispheres, two periods in time, and two philosophies. The first one venerates ancestors through the use of the Indic Romany language and old melodies, and the second harnesses the powers of cultural adaptation that are central to Romany, Jewish, and other minority cultures.
The pieces on this recording invite listeners to analyze and appreciate the mix of styles ranging from traditional Romany and Russian sounds to compositions the band calls Nuevo Russian-Romany music. Influences include samba, flamenco, klezmer, and touches of R&B, among a number of others. Lovers of broad-ranging jazz improvisation definitely won’t be disappointed.

Loved this CD! Via Romen creates the coolest sound, mixing the gypsy music influences - russian and balkan gypsy, spanish flamenco - in unexpected ways, adding latin, jazz, klezmer themes. Beware listening to Mar Djandja - you would want to jump up and start dancing right away! Lots of awesome jazz improvisations in Gitana Judea, Sasha Kolpakov's Fantasy, My Two Homes. The first song on the CD - Amare Chavore - is my absolute favorite.
