Victoria Moralez - Days And Seasons
Release 2009-11-16
Days and seasons is an apt description for what we find when Victoria opens the door to her musical world and invites us in. The journey begins in the hopeful glimmer of Springtime, from where “High Heels And Short Legs” draws its inspiration.
Summer. The season of light & warmth, where relaxation and dance are brought to the fore. What then could be more fitting for dance than the enticing rhythms of Reggae and the deep melodies of Jazz. In “I Never Needed You More” we find Victoria’s vocals blended with the warm & musical Zulu singing of Mzwakhe Hlatshwayo against a backdrop of traditional and unorthodox (in this case a saw) Reggae elements which together create a unique and engaging atmosphere.
“Flow Vuela” captures the heat of late summer when the ground is warm from months of sunshine and the traffic of playful feet. “Flow Vuela” features the spoken-word talents of Wasabifunk, a multi-lingual artist born in Angola and raised in Spain and the UK, juxtaposed against a background of progressive guitar, Jazz trumpet, and exotic rhythms.
As the heat of summer fades, a time of self-reflection is ushered in. A time of contemplation, completion and confusion is upon us. “Days Of Claustrophobia” is a statement of these autumnal qualities. We begin to see more of the introverted and reflective side of Victoria as we listen to “You Took Off To Mars” which draws upon classical-style expression. Or “Days And Seasons” where the guitar performance of Kenny Håkansson echoes the clear yet understated message in the lyrics; we’ll never have all the answers and we desire each others warmth during our search.
And then comes the winter. After conclusion, comes transformation. “Epiphany” performed by the Southern Voice Choir of Moldavia is a moving and evocative prelude to “And Then I Grew Old”. A song whose intense guitars, piano textures and grand horn arrangements set the stage for a story which takes us on a journey through transformation to a place where we can let go and allow the new to replace the old.
“Categorize Me” can be viewed as Victoria’s way of expressing that within her musical world, there are no limits, no conscious nations and no clear rules about right and wrong. "The thing I do is not that new I do things my own way. Behold beware beyond belief ascend and find your way. But don't try to categorize me."
The new cycle becomes apparent with the new year’s challenges and discoveries. We are lulled to sleep by “Go Where You Dream To Be” and as the music gradually fades away, a fragile, lo-fi string section remains to intone its lonely goodbye.
“Space Cadet” is a final track, which is a small reminder that the music never ends.
Victoria Moralez is a self-taught musician, singer, composer and producer.
“Days And Seasons” is her debut album which has been preceded by the singles “Sunshine In Your Hair” and “I Never Needed You More”. Both of which have been played on various European radio stations including the BBC’s Jonathan Ross and Mark Lamarr shows.
