'Watsky' By George Watsky
I'm assuming you are a fan because you're reading this. This note is a sort of review, sort of a collection of random thoughts about Watsky's album (and a couple bonus Watsky tracks). Now, I'm no Watsky snob, but he does have a lot of amazing stuff out there beyond his fast raps. These of course are just my opinions and I have no real qualifications to "review" a music album. Anyways, here it is: "Watsky" -George Watsky Headphones- Watsky Album “I can’t hear you (I’ve got my headphones on)” Nice intro first track. It kind of reminds you of how awesome music just is as “an escape”. Noise canceling headphones could be one of the greatest inventions ever. The sucky thing about Watsky music is that the lyrics are usually too good to be study music. I can’t just listen to Watsky as a background music to studying very well, I find myself listening to the song and thinking about it and not reading. It is however great chill out/walking around/make me happy music. Great lines: “When I take a look around, and it feels like two’s a crowd, I don’t run and hide, I just smile real wide and I turn my music loud.” “It’s not practical, to react to bull/ I was thinking too hard and I cracked my skull (ow!)”
Amplified “The mike’s turned off, but I’m amplified” It’s cool to hear the other artists Watsky collaborates with. Intelligent and epic indeed. And it is a good thing Watsky is around to lead the crowd. Great lines: “I’ve been tellin em the melanin’s irrelevant I’m yellin and you’ll feel it from the ceiling to the sediment/intelligent epic and reppin the Bay/you’re tripping if youre thinking that you’re getting away” F*** An Emcee Name- Watsky Album, Youtube I’ve had other people tell me this is their favorite track. It’s not my favorite but I do like it. The video is great and I do like that all of these videos have a very professional video quality to them. But even “Who’s Been Loving You” has a professional video quality to it, but it is still genuine (and funny) and not “commercial” at all. Great lines: “Here lies a fine emcee, the kind who grasps the fact that these aren’t circus acts to make you clap, it’s rap to make you think and act!”
Seizure Boy- Watsky Album, Soundcloud Mashup, Youtube Video “It’s all too much” This song is well, you know, poignant. After listening, you learn a little about Watsky and also about struggling with a hardship and having to deal with it when you’re young. I also really like that there are three versions of this song, all with slightly different backup music, but same Watsky lyrics. Great lines: “if my eyes glaze and my knees drift south/And you think to stick a credit card in my mouth/I take Mastercard and Visa for my risk rewards/I’m not biting my tongue, why don’t you bite yours?
G.O.A.T (W.G.M.F.M.C.)- Watsky Album I don’t really like this song. I also don’t know what the title stands for. But I think that’s the point. Waking Hour- Watsky Album, Soundcloud Mashup
“In the Waking Hour” Talk about being honest. This one is not exactly G rated. Watsky, someone I’ve never met, is a lot more open and honest than a lot of people I have met. Also, Mariami singing. Dayum. Great lines: Just listen to the song for this one.
The Girl Next Door- Watsky Album “It’s a song about the girl next door.” This song exemplifies what I meant by telling a good story. You feel the emotion, you feel like you were the one cheated. I sound like a broken record, but the lyrical component of the whole thing is genius. Great lines: “It’s evident you think you’re helen of troy/but you’re hell in a handbasket/hell of a coy little cruella de vil/If it’s fitting you fill in/another filthy felony with every fella you thrill”
Run My Mouth- Watsky Album “I know, you know” Yeah, I know some people who like to run their mouths. And don’t we all say things we don’t quite mean sometimes? Great lines: “i’m a fast talker/louder than a brass knocker/cricket or a grasshopper” “i guess that’s why they call me georgie porgie puddin pie/before i kiss my girl i put her on a sugar high”
Who’s Been Loving You- Watsky Album, Soundcloud Mashup, Youtube Video “Who’s beeeeeeen looooooooooving youuuuuuuuuuu?” A rather universal question I think. Maybe my second favorite song? I really like this video- it makes me think back to my childhood. We also get to see a glimpse of the life of Watsky. Great lines: “You are a good little fast talker”
I’ve Got This Love- Watsky Album, Youtube Video “I’ve Got this Love because, because, because, because…” This one is just packed full of great lyrics. It’s a peaceful song and…well just listen to it. “It’s for the deaf kid in the aisle of the symphony/ who hears it through the rumble of the tuba and the timpani” “and yes occasionally we get drunk and out of line/and last night, there’s a lamp post that I asked to be my valentine/Last night in my hot mess/That lamp post said yes” “Because there’s furor over every juror paid off/and because the furor used to be a boy named Adolph”
Fight! Fight! Fight!- Watsky Album “If you don’t like me…” Good music and a good beat to go along with the fightin’ words. “So far to lead us to indagadenevita/to seeking god in your freedom/to God I gotta lead a vida bonita/ cause see to lead a beautiful life/ is more than eating, sleeping and meeting suitable wife” “said If you’re taller better follow who you’re stepping on/ Cause I’ll be brawling like the fighting Irish leprechaun”
Colored Lines- Watsky Album “These colored lines, these colored mines” Watsky tackles race relations. This song reminds me of Hercules in that it deals with stuff you don’t hear on other places. “I write these colored lines ‘cause if I don’t I’ll lose my mind”
Hercules- Watsky Album “I know I’m just as strong as Hercules” There are two main definitions of awesome. One is the informal “wow that dude’s awesome!” (which applies to Watsky as a whole). But, this track is the other type of awesome: “causing feelings of fear and wonder : causing feelings of awe; awe inspiring”. I heard the Soundcloud mashup version of this song first. I remember getting shivers by the end of it- there is just such a force and power behind this song. The music track behind the Soundcloud version is just so so so perfect. I lose track of everything else that is going on around me when this song comes on and I just listen and think. I mention that Colored Lines and this song have a lot of similar themes. To me, this song is grappling with the fact that we all have a history, family and otherwise, from the minute we are born. What will the legacy of their actions be on our own lives? Must we atone for the sins of our fathers? If I had to pick a favorite song, this would be it. Great lines: Eh, pretty much all of them…
Two Blue Moons- Watsky Album, Soundcloud Mashup “I want to tell you my brother I feel the same way too” I honestly didn’t really like this song the first couple of times I listened to it. I would just hit next. Then I gave it a chance and it turned out to be a favorite. It would be odd to be surprised by this, but the lyrics are of course great. It is a story of two brothers told to music. But in a classic Watsky fashion, it makes you feel an emotion in a way that most music does not. The Soundcloud version is OK, but the original is better. Great lines: “if we suffer i’ll be sentimental when we grow/get born, ready go, got a separate embryo/breaking like a levy though, wading through the heavy flow/when you see light let me know, bro
Everything Turns Gold- Watsky Album “When the sun sits on the city…” I feel like this song should be on the radio. Of course, I would have all Watsky on the radio. A lot, maybe most, of the songs on this album probably weren’t made or I don’t think are appropriate for the radio, but something about this one seems like even the most casual radio listener could like this song. This song has the beautiful background vocals, good music track, and of course the typical brilliant poetic Watsky lyrics. On the song itself, it is just sort of a nice, peaceful, reflective song. I think there might be undertones of death or at least old age? Great lines: “Polly want a collarbone?” “I ate dirt as a baby/ I did it for the flavor/ in a couple years I’ll let the dirt return the favor.” *************** Stupidass- Soundcloud, Youtube “If I could go back…” I didn’t even really notice that this isn’t on the Watsky album. Still, a fun song. Something everyone can probably relate to- wanting to go back in time. I like the whole song, but my favorite verse is the one in the Youtube video. The video is creative to match the song. Great lines: Some days I wake up and i wonder 'what would Buddha do?'/And then I jump into my fruity little Subaru ******** Some Bonus Watsky not on the Album- *Cumbersome- Watsky’s Dad’s Poem put to nice jazz and an awesome stop animation “and died a crustacean Methuselah with a weighted screen above his head” *Randos I just really like the background music on this one- “Wahhhh wahhhh wah wahhhhhhhhhh” *Reading Great Show This isn’t even really a music track but it is still catchy. It is actually the announcement for the Watsky Album “I put it on the table the best that I’m able/fresh from the oven like a sesame bagel *Pale Kid Raps Fast I dunno, someone told me about this and said it was good or something. :) *Goat Fast Rapper Goats and fast rapping *Wikipedia Tribute Hahah! Awesomely nerdy song. “Frank Maudsley!”
