And the field was as green
As their blood ran red
Under the grey, ashen pallor
Of smouldering cannon and lead

The battlements now silent
A truce briefly sustained
To sort the dead from the dying
By the weary and maimed

As crimson clouds hang in mourning
Stillborn in the dawn's early light
To spare the sun bitter sorrow
From a view of the heartbreaking sight

For no passage of time
Nor torrent of rain
Will ever cleanse the ground
Of its bloody stain

And the flags wave proudly in tatters
Over the lifeless bodies they bore
Never once daring to question
Mankind's desire for war
