The ZigZag Quartet made its Lincoln Center debut at the Bruno Walter Auditorium and has since continued to receive accolades for its attractive acoustic blend, versatility and visually entertaining performances.

The unique ensemble consists of: Francisco Roldán (guitar), Alexander Wu (piano), Hilliard Greene (double bass) and Danny Mallon (percussion). They offer a wide variety of musical styles, including their own innovative arrangements of the classics, spanning three centuries: from the Baroque to jazz and Latin American, to premiered works written for the quartet. In addition, a mix of solos, duos and trios showcase the artists and the instruments.

\ˈzig-ˌzag\ : A group of musicians, set at angles to one another and connected to form a continuous musical line.

While this may not be Webster's own definition, it gives an insight into the group's varied ethnic, musical and cultural background, as well as its musical direction. Each member of ZigZag is a soloist in his own right. Within the group, this role changes hands organically as each musician weaves in and out of the arrangements like a game of musical chairs. We zigzag through countries, time periods and dance styles: A fandango from Baroque Italy, 1950's Brazilian bossas and sambas, an Argentine tango, a jazz-influenced suite by a French composer, Dominican dances and a hot-off-the-press commission by a native New Yorker.

Almost all the pieces on this recording were arranged or augmented by ZigZag to fit the instrumentation. We hope that the composers and the listener will enjoy the performances and hear our joy in the interpretation.
