Aaron Niequist is a songwriter who was a worship leader at Willow Creek Church (Barrington, IL) and Mars Hill Bible Church (Grand Rapids, MI). Growing up listening to The Beatles, he fell in love with great melodies and songwriting. Upon discovering Keith Green and Ben Folds, he fell in love with injuring himself by pounding the piano. And being in high school during the whole grunge thing, he became absolutely committed to trying to create something honest. . .especially when writing songs about God and faith. There are way too many lies in today’s church music. Aaron has given the last ten years of his life to creating songs of searching, raging, discovering, enjoying, doubting, and hope for people who have given up on church but haven’t given up on God.
Aaron’s newest recording, “With Broken Fists” is a collection of prayers, pleas, and promises to God. (Alliteration is always awful.) Functionally, these songs were written to be sung by a group of people, but they’re actually quite personal. And by trying to give voice to a community, he discovered, almost accidentally, what that small voice inside of him was trying to make sense of. Those jumbled moments of wrestling with the mystery of it all found their way into these melodies and onto the CD. Musically, it sounds like a piano driven indie-rock band wrapping it’s arms around as many instruments and colors as it can find.

Really Satisfying

4.5 stars!
I was introduced to Aaron by a young couple (yo Matt & Briana!) after my first time leading worship in Feb '09. They let me borrow their copy of the CD. A couple weeks later I led worship again, and we played/sang "Here Are My Hands," which fit perfectly with the message that morning. My favorite line is, "Your kingdom come, my kingdom go," and the context makes it especially moving. Needless to say, since then I've been buying copies of this album 3 at a time and gifting them away.
Great work, Aaron. Much appreciated. Unique, artistic, tasteful, from-the-zone and so satisfying.

We are SO lucky to have Aaron live @ Willow! We heard his song "Changed" this weekend and I immediately bought the album. I must say (no offense Aaron) it sounds SO much better with the whole church worshiping! GREAT SONG! I've been "Changed!"
