DARYL ABERHART THE CAT WITHIN

+++Thanks to all the wonderful folks who have purchased a copy and for all the positive feedback and messages you have been sending.+++

The instrumental music of jazz guitar legend John Scofield has been given an inspired lyrical treatment on a new album, The Cat Within, recorded by Australian vocalist /musician /composer Daryl Aberhart.

This landmark recording is the first time the Scofields have given their blessing to such a project, and after listening to the first song, title track 'The cat within ', it's easy to hear why; this album is a pure and positive affirmation.

Scofield’s original melodies and harmonies are shown total respect throughout The cat within, and Aberhart’s savvy lyrical treatment and arrangements give this album a broad based accessibility that allows the music to function on wide variety of levels.

Track selections have been taken from albums including 'Time on my hands', 'GrooveElation', 'Hand Jive' and 'Bump', giving a tasty overview of Scofield's recorded work during the period from 1990-1999.

There is a real variety of flavours on 'The Cat Within', from the sly 7/4 funk of ‘The Office’ , the raucous fusion chops of ‘Put a sock in it', to the reflective and bittersweet ballad ‘ Remember me ’ .
Cocktail soul numbers like ‘ Gonna find my way ’ and ‘ Face the facts ’ combine with the jungle groove of ‘Blonde and blue ’ , the slinky ‘Loosen up’, and the down home ‘ Beat the burro ’ to keep even the most hip dance floor happy.

The relaxed joy of the ensemble playing on 'The cat within' disguises some serious capability on behalf of the musicians.Daryl’s intonation, phrasing and tone impart even more life into already breath taking melodies, which are sent uptown via sharp backing vocal arrangements, beautifully realised by well respected Sydney based vocalist Lily Dior.
Jazz purists and Scofield fans are well accommodated as featured instrumentalists Gary Daley (organ),Dave Longo (guitar),and Richard Maegraith (saxophone) stroll up Scofield’s spiky harmonic ladders with ease and style. The rhythm section of drummer Nic Cecire and bassist Brett Hirst sew deep pockets laying down sassy grooves, whilst maintaining the fresh taste and integrity of the original tracks.

The Cat Within is truly an ensemble effort, with the jazz muscle more sinew than bulk, obtained more by chopping wood than clocking overtime at the gym.
The focus becomes the vocalisation of the feeling translated by Scofield’s music as a whole and it feels great.

The Cat Within was recorded by Michael Henshaw at Paradise Studios ,and mastered by Steve Smart at studio 301

Daryl Aberhart had some kind of a stroke of genius or a brilliant idea indeed when he thought of putting words to the inspiring music of our dearly beloved John Scofield and sing it. Singing it in fact brought a touch of added dynamicity and energy to it: a suasive idea that catches on you as quick as the notes reaching your ears. It was just beautiful to let us share the emotions he must have experienced himself when performing these songs! It made me also think of the last gig that I had the pleasure to attend of John Scofield live with the Ray Charles tribute band he used to bring on tour with him two years ago. That was awesome I remember when I also thought that was one if not already the best live live band I had seen playing with Scofield, for the presence of a good singer in the line-up!! Thanks Daryl Aberhart for the very good work you have accomplished with The Cat Within!

Having seen the artist perform, I find the CD doesn't truly represent the artist's breadth of talent. For me, some fine tracks, others not so.

This is one hot cool number, a real feather in the cap of the wonderfully clever cat within Daryl Aberhart. Congratulations and bloody goodonya mate to a fellow boy from Oz - very well done indeed for this superb, now lyrically supercharged collection of some of John Scofield's best ! It's hard to imagine these pieces being improved upon, but the proof is in the listening pleasure.

Wow! Great CD. I have almost all of Scofields CD's and was sceptical at first but after the first few notes I loved it. Every song was a surprise. I had and still have great fun in comparing it to the original. Great lyrics. IDEA; Scofield should call Aberhart and do an album together.
