A french horn with an acid kick
It's fantastic what Alex Brofsky has created. Stylistic between acid jazz, smooth jazz, drum&bass, rap. hiphop, he still has his own dark mooded style. Personally I like pieces as "Juicing", "Say It" or "Steel Reflections", that means his cooperation with great female singers. There he would find his splendid future. Nevertheless this album presents some special tunes you will love.

If you like your jazz with a few extra's thrown in, you might like The Unentitle
When we here at Epinions last read about Alex Brofsky, it was as part of a decade-old EP by an acid jazz duo known as Beat Demons. Beat Demons was a hip-hop-inspired acid jazz act consisting of Brofsky and Winston Clements. Their sound was gritty, funky, and topped off with Brofsky's french horn.
Fast forward about five years later to 2000's The Unentitled - the duo are still collaborating, although they now refer to themselves as AB+ (Brofsky) and Don Q (Clements.) One shouldn't purchase The Unentitled expecting a rehash of the Beat Demons EP, however. For one thing, while the two men are still working together, this is clearly AB+'s show, and there is a lot more going on here than hip-hop beats and french horn.
That's not to say that The Unentitled doesn't have anything to satisfy a Beat Demons fan. $tar War$$ picks up right where Ghetto Jazz left off - Don Q raps over an easygoing hip-hop groove while AB+ solos around him. This is acid jazz at its most effortless - I swear it sounds like these two could do this stuff in their sleep. Limboh Jazz has plenty to offer acid jazz fans. A mellow hip-hop beat, scratching, and subtle keyboards provide a backdrop as AB+ and guest Chris Rogers play off each other on french horn and muted trumpet, respectively. Simply a very smooth listen for mellow head nodders!
Yet, The Unentitled isn't just an acid jazz album. Things get downright spiritual on Faith, as uplifting a track as you'll ever hear away from your local church on a Sunday morning. AB+ does some fine work on both piano and horn here, and just try not to get goose bumps when Judith Engel breaks in with a soprano choir toward the end. Faith is merely one example of the diversity of this CD. Much of The Unentitled sounds very soulful, if I may. Poem On My Birthday uses an electric piano for a 1970's R&B sound, complimenting the smooth vocals of AB . But it's the little things that make the tune a treat - the drum programming, the sparse bongo percussion, the finger snaps. Not to mention the french horn just sounds beautiful here.
Fans of female vocalists may want to check out Say It, the R&B-tinged track that leads off the CD. Rita Hage-Boutros sounds quite sexy on the vocals, and listen closely for some scratching from Don Q in the background. Say It is another track for electric piano lovers as well, for it features prominently. 39 has romance written all over it, particularly when Hage-Boutros starts "singing" - she isn't saying anything, but man is it a turn-on when she does it. It's a great wine and candlelight track, with its smooth keyboards and beat.
Still, one shouldn't purchase The Unentitled expecting non-stop R&B cuts with female vocals. Sure there is a lot of that going on, but there's more. For instance, H is a reflective, somber number featuring some elegant piano and french horn playing by AB , reminding one of the change of seasons, or perhaps a love long lost. Down With the Count features a sample of old Count Basie-style swing, which AB+ takes on, alternately fading in with the same beat, albeit modernized. It's a nifty way to close the CD, a joining of the old and the new.
Needless to say, there is a lot happening on The Unentitled, a CD that more than shows off the diversity of AB+. There is acid jazz and there is romance. There is R&B and there is soul. Buy it if you like french horn or electric piano. Buy it if you prefer to support artists going the independent route. I've been listening to The Unentitled all summer - buy it and you just might find yourself doing the same.
