A tight group with a fresh approach
author: Garage Radio Magazine
It's been a long time since Sacramento's Absent Me has released any new material, but when they sent me the first actual release in their six-year history, Hate To Wake You, I was giddy as a schoolboy on the day of my first BJ! If you're already familiar with Absent Me, don't expect to hear the same ol' shit. In fact, I was surprised that a couple of their trademark tunes (like "Gloria" and "Save Me") didn't make the album.
At first, a certain familiarity with Absent Me's music kicks in with the first track, "2wenty 1," but the feeling melts away with a little inspired listening ... as it progresses into a dark, potent anecdote of angst, confusion and loneliness while growing into adulthood. Even more impressive is the unexpected meld between it and "Kuatro." For a few seconds you think you're listening to an instrumental bridge until the faux reggae throws you for a loop.
The rest of the album stays true to form by exploiting a number of styles ... from Tool to Rush to the less obvious Nine Inch Nails ... all of which contribute to a unique style that can only be described best by actually listening to the music.
These guys are extremely talented and certainly not lyrically impaired. All of the right elements are there and the production quality is outstanding. Their unconventional style and technical finesse adds a whole new dynamic to the progressive rock genre. Just when you're thinking progressive they go alternative on you.
It's obvious that Absent Me put a lot of thought into the composition of every song on Hate To Wake You. The hooks are truly natural, the instrument work is phenomenal and the lyrics speak to a lot of those weird feelings everyone's had, but probably never admitted. All in all, it's an impressive collection of powerful works, destined to become a landmark effort for these guys.
These guys are a tight group with a fresh approach and huge emphasis on musical quality. Hate To Wake You not only takes the term "progressive" to a new level, but also challenges us to look inside ourselves. EAT YOUR HEART OUT MAYNARD!!! 5 Stars ... EASY!
