The Ace of Spades free acoustic series is hosted once a month from the Mama Buzz Cafe in downtown Oakland. Every 3rd sunday, a number of incredible local musicians have come down and played acoustic sets for a captive audience. Some of the guests include well-known acts such as Sub Pop's Rogue Wave, Drag City's Faun Fables, Birdman artists Paula Frazer and Brian Glaze and local phenom Sean Hayes, as well as a bunch of equally talented, but less well-known artists. The sessions are all recorded and they have turned out incredibly well.
The Ace of Spades cd features 17 tracks recorded at the Mama Buzz Café here in downtown Oakland. This one-time limited edition of 1200 cd's is a collection of live recordings and include unreleased tracks by Bart Davenport, Etienne de Rocher, Mandrake and others as well as a special acoustic rendition of "Be Kind & Remind" from Oakland's Rogue Wave. Proceeds from cd sales are donated to the local chapter of Little Kids Rock [www.littlekidsrock.org], an organization dedicated to bringing music education back into our classrooms.
Please have a listen, and if you folks would buy a copy of this great compilation of live tracks, we would be very grateful.

Ace of Spades

I may be a tad biased because I'm originally from the Bay Area, but this release is a definite no brainer if you love strikingly emotive and hauntingly beautiful music. Bands such as Audio Out Send, Mandrake, The Lonelyhearts, etc., can just do no wrong...and I'm not easily impressed. The music that is coming out of Oakland, and other Bay Area hotbeds of talent, can be described as nothing less that stellar. I just hope the series continues!

Great Bay Area compilation of live recordings!
author: Liam Carey
I can't say whether or not the bay area is in the middle of a musical renaissance since many of these folks have been working their craft for decades. However, I can say that this is the best compilation of folk/rock artists to come out of the west coast that i've ever heard. Including unreleased tracks from Bart Davenport to acoustic renditions of Rogue Wave tunes, both major and minor artists have joined together, with proceeds going to the musical charity Little Kids Rock. This is a really fantastic series and a great album.
