Here’s A.O.K.’s follow up to the Fight or Fight EP...

Here’s A.O.K.’s follow up to the Fight or Fight EP, which had it’s smash hit, “Caffeine”. Their first EP, I thought was great and didn’t see much room for improvement, and I saw “Caffeine” as their benchmark to live up to in future recordings.
This CD, recorded about eighteen months from the first, still maintains their unique style, but shows some growth, and some subtle changes here and there. It’s a little heavier, and also shows a lot of patience on behalf of the songwriter to not just bust out another rock song, but to fine tune it to perfection.
I’ve always been drawn towards lyrics myself. there’s a million rockin’
songs out there, but what do you have to say? A.O.K. not only writes great lyrics, but I think that they stumbled into what the Portuguese call duende. To make a long story short, duende is that deep dark undertone that is necessary for a song to survive and touch people. It’s the blues beneath the surface that separates real musicians from that guy who wrote “All The Small Things”. It’s a love song that braces itself for an equally opposite rejection. It’s why the world knows Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy, and Don McLean. (Search: The Duende: Theory and Divertissement by Federico Garcia Lorca) “In Your Arms” is by far my favourite song here. It gives this album the right to use Neitzsche’s most famous quote for the title. It’s a song of survival, and weathering the storm. Hope, desperation, struggle, then relief.
Overall, I think Aces Over Kings is doing it right. They’re producing great songs, they have something to say, they’re a great all around band for all ages, they’re a positive influence on all these crazy kids running around, and their sound, though somewhat timeless, is what seems to be popular right now.
