ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A Chinese Firedrill “circles” is a solo project from veteran bassist Joey Vera. Joey has been in the music business since 1981 having been involved in many groups including Armored Saint, Fates Warning (both of which he is still a current member), Anthrax, OSI, Tribe After Tribe, Seven Witches, Engine and Chroma Key to name a few.

A Chinese Firedrill “circles” was written, recorded and performed by Joey from May 2005 – June 2006. Truly a solo project, Joey performs all of the instruments and vocals with the exception of the drum tracks performed by a local friend. The music on “circles” was conceived out of a desire to pull influences from the past and subject the writing process to an “experiment in arrangements and instrumentation”. To put the necessary “label” on the type of music on this record, Joey is calling it Prog/Art Hard Rock. The record draws from his early influences such as Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Rush, and from more recent influences such as Tool, Porcupine Tree, King’s X and OSI.

“circles” contains 7 tracks which by today’s standard might seem short but Joey insists that at 45:57 the listener will not be over saturated with music. He intentionally wanted to make a somewhat short record as his “attention span is not that long” for many of today’s records which clock in at well over an hour of time.

Engineered and Produced by Joey Vera. Total running time 45:57

Good stuff!
Interesting mixture of progressive rock and hard rock/metal. For fans of Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Tool, etc.

Excellent!
5 stars is right! Been a fan of Joey ALL the way back to the early Saint days. His contributions to that band as well as Engine, Fate Warning, and even Anthrax(Live), among others, are priceless and only served to better those groups' collective efforts. "A Chinese Firedrill", which is largely performed, recorded, and completely written by Joey himself, is no exception to those skills. What you have here is a glimpse into the mind of this great performer/songwriter unhindered by the constraints of his contemporaries. When listening to the album, you could get the sense that he's not holding anything back, allowing the music to take you on a TRUE journey; a journey many times promised by some of his peers but never delivered. This is the stuff great albums are made of, and is what "A Chinese Firedrill" dishes out by the truck load. If you're a fan of thought provoking, ALBUM oriented progressive(In the true sense)Rock, than this disc is already your favorite album of the year...

A great CD, light & space w/ powerful rhythm & pulsing bass...
This is my first exposure to Joey Vera, and A Chinese Firedrill is an awesome introduction. Progressive and ethereal in many parts, with powerful bass laying the foundation it can take you on a journey full of groove and mood. Highly recommended!

CD of the Year! Heavy version of Peter Gabriel
This has been a great pleasure to listen from start to finish. No filler tracks. Quality of music is impressive which reminds me of a heavier version of Peter Gabriel (and you know how much of a musical genius he is). Don't hesitate in buying this cd. If you are a fan of Peter Gabriel, Fates Warning, OSI, or any prog band out there you will not be disappointed.

Thanks Joey for this great album.

This CD is great. I consider it to be the next level of progressive rock and met
As expected this CD is great. I consider it to be the next level of progressive rock and metal.
It proves you don’t have to write long long songs in order to be progressive.
Intelligent and interesting in the spirit of OSI and Fates Warning last albums. Joey Vera is a master musician.
