Would be interesting to hear Randall's original music within an entire jamgrass
author: Joe Ross
Playing Time – 31:20 -- Acoustic Randall (aka Randall Smith) originally hails from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia (Harrisonburg, VA.) but he now calls Portland, OR. home. His primary influences include Jerry Garcia Band, David Grisman, Widespread Panic, Bob Dylan, Leftover Salmon, Larry Keel, Tom T. Hall, Tony Rice and Seldom Scene. Randall is of a younger generation the reveres traditional music. He can play in a straight-ahead traditional flatpick style, or he can also change gears by adding jamband stylings to please the listener looking for little twists on standard tunes. His goal is to ultimately enable a wider audience to enjoy acoustic music.
Nine original tracks and two others (‘Cindy” and “Going Back to Eugene”) demonstrate why this eccentric solo guitarist and singer is a favorite opening act for bands like Big Island Shindig at jamband festivals. His style incorporates blues, folk and bluegrass stylings, and he’s been writing and performing since the early 1990s. His early gigs were heavy on improvisation, and he describes his coffeehouse audiences as “college students, visiting parents, philosophers, writers, gamers, wayward punks and hippies.” Acoustic Randall’s chordal work lays down the musical motifs that provide a foundation for his messages. Randall’s recurring thematic decorations and mesmerizing singing easily put a listener under a spell. It would be interesting to hear Acoustic Randall's music within the context of an entire jamgrass band with some hot instrumental breaks and soaring vocal harmonies on the choruses. When you listen to his music, you can imagine hearing specific instruments such as upright bass, fiddle, harmonica, and mandolin playing right along. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
