Album Notes

A proud native of Athens, GA, Adam Klein writes strongly crafted, literate, rustic, passion-filled, straight-from-the-heart “country-folk” songs. Having come of age frequenting shows in the famed nightclubs of his hometown, Klein has been influenced and shaped by Athens’ thriving and diverse music scene.

Distant Music, self-released in April 2006 on Cowboy Angel Music, is Klein’s first long-player, indeed his first release. The album was recorded by David Barbe (Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Drive-By Truckers, Kevn Kinney) at his Chase Park Transduction studio in Athens. Recorded on vintage analog equipment, these recordings capture Klein’s moving voice in its purest form— charming, passionate, intimate, and vulnerable.

Klein recruited a number of talented local musicians to help fill out the songs. William Tonks (Workhorses of the Ent./Rec. Industry, Barbara Cue, Jack Logan and the Monday Night Recorders) provided the dobro and tremolo guitar sounds, John Neff (ex-Star Room Boys, Drive-By Truckers, Barbara Cue, Jack Logan...) manned the pedal steel, David Blackmon (Blueground Undergrass) played fiddle, and Clay Leverett (Now It’s Overhead, The Chasers) sang his trademark high harmonies. The added instrumentation complements the acoustic tracks with warm, lush textures, layerings, and the perfect undercurrents of both searching and yearning.

Adam holds an MA in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and a BA in English and American Lit. from Brandeis University. His extensive travels played an important role in shaping Distant Music, a record, he maintains, with a great deal of movement and distance. The album was formed, among other places, in Boston, Australia, and Mali, West Africa, where Klein lived for two years in the village of Dougouolo as a Peace Corps Volunteer.

“I’ve found that songs tend to reflect the place, and space, in which they form,” he says. “In Mali, I was living in the middle of a great expansive bush land, according to the natural cycles of the sun, moon, and the land. Felt like something straight out of Faulkner or Steinbeck— take the donkey cart into the county seat 25km away for market day. Sleeping outside, under the stars, for a year and a half. And the songs I wrote there, sitting in my shade spot, or strumming a guitar at night, in silence under a canopy of stars, reflect and complement that environment. Many of the songs of Distant Music— “Lonesome and Aching” especially, plus “Full Moon Night”, “Mississippi Momma”, and “Dusty Rose”, written on the banks of the Niger River in Segou, are products of the stillness and peace of their homeland, deep Mali.”

Distant Music explores the timeless themes of love, loss, distance, movement, and home.

A subtle little gem.. classic country tinged singer/songwriter tunes.
author: Music Emissions
Klein plays classic country tinged singer/songwriter tunes. You cannot listen to the moody beauty of "Dusty Rose" or "Visions of Faith" and feel in familiar, but comforting territory. Not that the songs themselves are comforting; they moan and mourn, and words echo over the guitar and harmonica at times as if they were not even there. Haunted and lonely count as memories that can be comfortable too; at least you've been there and can expect some of what you are feeling. Klein feels that, and when he sticks to that low moan, all is well... This is a subtle little gem, from a guy who has not only absorbed the country mythos, but has also in the past explored other sounds. He once spent some time in West Africa, and even wrote opera in Mali in the local tongue. May more unexpected and welcome sources keep adding to his already rich cache.

Nestled nicely between folk and alt.country. Distant Music is a great album.

On Distant Music, Adam Klein plays his role of a singer-songwriter who isn’t quite folk, and isn’t quite alt.country, but rather nestled nicely between the two. With the sweet opener, “St. Paul,” he walks that fine line and ends up with a sound resembling Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner. On the acoustic-laced “Restless Soul” and the barren “Dusty Rose” he works in the vein of Tim Easton or others of that fine ilk. Klein rarely ventures out of this comfort zone, instead nailing tunes like “Full Moon Night” out of the park with its subtle pedal steel accents. It’s the sort of music you’d hate to hear in a bar because people would be idiotically talking over tunes such as “Visions Of Faith” with its close, hushed feeling running throughout it. The same can be said for “Truck Stop Love,” the somewhat warm and folksy “Walkin’” that shines bright, and the Nebraska-ish album highight, “Bound To Roam.” Distant Music is a great album, but one that will sadly fall under most people’s radar.

Singer-songwriter Adam Klein is an Athens ex-pat who last year returned to the area and his debut album, 'Distant Music', follows a melodic acoustic bent similar to that of Kevn Kinney or New Jersey's Neil Casal. Songs like "St. Paul", "Mississippi Momma" and the swooning, Alex Chilton-esque "Dusty Rose" are a few examples of the album's comfy minimal setup working in Klein's favor. His wavering vocals are always directly in the forefront, the wide-open breathing room filled by pedal steel, fiddle, dobro and hand drums. Even though Klein's voice somewhat falters (albeit part of 'Distant's' amiable charm) he's nonetheless assembled an engaging debut that's as reliable and uncomplicated as a stout cup of coffee. It's a fun, unpretentious batch of originals that suits this decade as well as any of the previous four. Klein's already at work on at least one follow-up album, and that's a lucky thing for Athens.

“Klein’s fragile, plaintive voice is charming… Opening track ‘St. Paul’ is a good start, a gentle sweet song… ‘Restless Soul’ adds some Dylan-style high-note harmonica over another gentle song… ‘Dusty Rose’ and ‘Full Moon Night’ are the stand out tracks on Klein’s debut… [‘Full Moon Night’] is by far the catchiest song on show and is screaming out to be released as a single. Klein also proves he has a sense of humor in ‘Truck Stop Love’, an ode to a “southern-fried angel”… fans of Jason McNiff, Ray Lamontagne and other soft-lunged singers may enjoy this gentle album.”
