ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
This is Adib's first solo release but he is by no means new the industry. He has over forty years of experience as a singer, songwriter, percussionist, educator and bandleader. This CD finds Adib bringing all of his wisdom, experience and seasoning to the table to create a Jazz masterpiece. "Songs For My Father", is not just another standards record. Adib breathes new life into some of the most beautiful songs ever composed. This CD employs the skills of a very talented rhythm section consisting of Derrick D'MAR Martin on drums, Johnny Hubbard on bass and Sergio Fernandez on piano. The Cd opens with a Lou Rawls classic, Tobacco Road. Adib puts his own twist on this one. The only thing that's the same is the lyric. The melody and infectious groove all belong to Adib and his talented cast of musicians. Track two is Senor Blues which Adib gives an afro cuban feel infused with a deep Mississippi blues swagger with special guest Thomas Tiger Rogers on alto sax. Track three is the Lionel Hampton; Johnny Mercer classic, Midnight Sun in which Adib uses his rich laid back vocal tone to paint a melodically beautiful picture in the most romantic way. Tenor Sax man Booker Walker makes an appearance as well. Pure perfection. Track four is the Horace Silver classic, Song For My Father. Adib does this one in dedication to his father Dr. George A. Owens. His delivery of these Horace Silver lyrics sound as if he could have written this song himself. This song features Barry Leach on guitar. Adib delivers a heartfelt performance here. Track five is Autumn Leaves. Adib gives this one an unrelenting swing and soul that will have you up and dancing in your living room. Again we have an appearance by Booker Walker on sax. Track six is Muddy Water. Now you know Adib had to give you some blues and give it to you is exactly what he does. This version swings like Basie. This is another one that will have you swing dancing the night and/or day away. Featuring yet again Mr. Booker Walker on sax. Track seven finds Adib taking the Bill Withers classic, Ain't No Sunshine, and giving it a latin treatment. Adib's melodic and rhythmic vocal delivery coupled with the bands groove gives this standard new life. Thomas Tiger Rogers returns here on alto sax. Track eight is Green Dolphin Street. Adib treats us to a romantic afro cuban journey down Green Dolphin St. featuring Rufus Mapp on percussion. Track nine closes out the CD with a song made famous by Frank Sinatra, Very Good Year. Adib takes you a journey starting with a little neo soul groove which morphs into a rock vibe which gives way to an infectious latin feel and then takes us swinging all the way home. This is truly a modern masterpiece that will make a great addition to your collection of great music. Enjoy

Charles Hooker

Adib Owens-Sabir and "Songs for My Father" ...
First of all -- and with apologies to all the cool people I've ever known -- Adib is THE coolest guy ever ... and I don't think anyone who knows Adib would ever disagree! Second of all, his music pours compellingly from deep within his soul ... a soul with which he's in very close touch ... regardless whether it's coming from his magnificent hands through his congas or from his heart through his incredible voice. His gift of song is powered by his very own soul! And given that this album is dedicated to the memory of his extraordinary dad, listening to and absorbing Adib's music is an experience that no one should miss.
