RICHARD ADRIANOWICZ: Time Ashore is Over. Shanties and Sea Songs Featuring a
Chorus of Singers from San Francisco's Hyde Street Pier, 415-664-2858
I'm pleased to say that this first solo release from the Folk Club's own Richard Adrianowicz is one of the best traditional vocal albums I've acquired in some time. It's partly a collection of true working shanties and partly of sea-faring-related songs, some old, some recent. Everything is sung without accompaniment, other than Ricky Rackin's concertina on two tracks and Peter Kasin's fiddle on one other. Richard's singing is good, and strikes a tone more contemplative than that of the typical boisterous male shanty singer, although there's a goodly armload of them to be had on the shanty choruses. Even better than Richard's solo singing and chorusing with the Hyde Street Pier guys is the gorgeous three-part harmony on three tracks with the women - his old band, Out of the Rain (reunited in the studio for this album for the first time in what must be at least ten years, and they're certainly been missed).
Richard's choices of material are excellent, managing to steer clear of songs that are either too popular and oversung, or too folkloric. Collectively, they paint a more balanced picture of sea life than the manly stereotype of working, drinking, and whoring (although that's a part of it). There's also the longing for home and family, the drudgery and exhaustion, the brutality of some captains, the exploitation by bar owners and hookers, and the hope of creating a better life. My personal favorites are The Grimsby Lads, a very telling portrait of what life is like for Scottish trawler fishermen, Bound for Australia, a fond farewell to comrades in Ireland before starting anew, and Time Ashore is Over, an achingly tender farewell to the all-too-brief time onshore with the singer's love.
This album is marvelous work, and highly recommended. Great job, Richard.
