notes

”Compelling Southern California singer/songwriter/pianist Adrina Thorpe offers mesmerizing down-tempo rock-folk-pop. Though you may detect echoes of Tori Amos and other musical icons, Thorpe's lovely voice and profoundly moving songs enable her to carve a niche all her own. "Round the Bend" is an exquisite, soaring creation. Thorpe appears to be a talent on the brink of a major breakthrough.” –Palo Alto Daily News

"Thorpe's mastery of the keys is comparable to Sarah McLachlan and Norah Jones, while her breathy, airy vocal style is reminiscent of Enya and Leigh Nash of Sixpence None the Richer. ...Adrina Thorpe is destined for bigger and better things and could well lead the next generation of pianists/storytellers." MUSIC CONNECTION MAGAZINE

"an impressive debut album, packed with thoughtful
songs that are beautifully written, beautifully arranged,
beautifully performed and beautifully sung. Drawing deep
from the well of a host of great singer-songwriters, from
Carole King through to Tori Amos, Thorpe succeeds without
ever freefalling into the all too common trap of imitation. Rather, the album portrays a noble interplay of heritage and influence, and it's to startling effect. ...With lots more songs where these came from, Thorpe looks set to have a long and prosperous career." -thetrousers.co.uk

Adrina Thorpe's album, "elusive", contains 10 original songs written by Adrina Thorpe and produced by Dave Bassett (credits with Lisa Loeb, Evan & Jaron, etc.) and Phil Swann (credits with Lee Ann Womack, Helen Slater, etc.) "Adrina's going to make some noise in this racket everybody. Listen to her music and tell me I'm wrong...I dare you." ~Phil Swann

*******

Singer/songwriter and pianist, Adrina Thorpe, is a refreshing sound in adult alternative pop. Her style reflects the softer side of music, with a haunting voice and a delicate touch at the piano.

Adrina has been writing songs almost as long as she can remember. Her first song was written on a rainy car ride home when she was six. "All I can remember is looking through the foggy streaked window at little bursts of light outside in the pitch black sky, hearing the sound of the car's engine, and coming up with a song that brought me to tears that night. It was a song about a friend of mine who left our school without ever saying goodbye."

From that day on, Adrina's love of the more introspective melancholy song was established, as Adrina's list of favorite artists goes to show... Adrina has been inspired by artists on all ends of the musical spectrum, including Sarah McLachlan (Adrina's all time favorite artist), Coldplay, Five for Fighting, Tori Amos, Paula Cole, Dido, Evanescence and Chantal Kreviazuk. However her sound still retains its uniqueness. This may quite possibly be attributed to the fact that during Adrina's formative years she was completely immersed in classical music and musical theater. Adrina spent several years competing and winning several piano competitions, but it was truly the love of writing and singing that held a special place in her heart. Taking a songwriting class in Los Angeles, her instructor and classmates encouraged her to put out an album.

This album has gained an incredible underground following. Podshow.com says “with the voice of an "With the voice of an angel, Adrina's debut cd "Elusive" has kept her constantly in the Top 10 podsafe played songs.” The album has been licensed by Lifetime Cable and Warner Bros in film, tv, and online and has also been licensed by a number of independent filmmakers.

The album also recently got Adrina Thorpe noticed by DJ Shah and Armin Van Buuren (ranked #1 DJ in world) of Armada records. Adrina was asked to write a song for Armin Van Buuren's "A State of Trance 2007" CD with DJ Shah whose last collaboration was done with Sarah Mclachlan when he remixed Mclachlan's "Wintersong" album. Adrina Thorpe's collaboration with DJ Shah on Armin Van Buuren's album, "Who will find me" was recently commented on by Armin Van Buuren as being his favorite song of the year!

Adrina's debut album, "elusive" is full of intricate, poignant, honest, and gentle emotion. The initial release is almost sold out as we speak. Delicate piano melodies and lush vocals weave in and out of each other, drifting amid the punchy bass and drum lines. Wild and tame, strong and simple... the songs find their way into the deepest crevices of the heart. Like paper-thin china...like sunrise on the gray ocean waves...Adrina's melodies captivate listeners with their distinct beauty.

  • Brilliant!
    author: Nick Workman

I heard the track 'Fly' on a podcast and I thought 'wow that's a good track' then I heard it again on a different podcast a couple of weeks later and I thought 'that's not a good track, it's a brilliant track'. If I'd known that all the other tracks on the album were just as brilliant, I'd have bought it sooner! Adrina has a great voice and writes hauntingly beautiful songs. The piano work, the tempo, and the graceful use of pauses on some of these tracks reminds me of Einaudi. On the vocal side, if you like Lene Marlin you'll enjoy this too but not because they sound similar...they don't, rather because of the poignant, moving nature of the songs. Lene use mostly guitar-based melodies, Adrina mostly uses the piano so she has an altogether gentler sound.

  • Highly recommended

I have never heard anything before from Adrina, because I am from Austria (Europe), till I bought the Cd "Armin van Buuren - A state of Trance". There was a track witch the beautiful vocals of Adrina, so I wanted to hear more of her and searched for her in the internet. I only can say, I love this Cd, eventhough I normally listen to Techno and Trance. Her voice is amazing and also the lyrics are.

    author: Scott

My thanks to the reviewers of the movie "My name is Sarah" who connected me with this wonderful singer, Adrina Thorpe. Two of her songs are on the soundtrack--great accompaniment for a great love story--and her album ("Elusive") maintains that level of beauty.

    author: Marcia

This cd is so soothing and creative. The stories its songs tell are so far from typical! Adrina is certainly talented and Im so gonna support her until she's big! I sing as well so maybe we cud do a duet :D

  • Lyrical and vocal depth is soo childlike pure
    author: VK

Why Adrina don't you marry me? Especially after I heard 'did you think', great empathy and lyrics. Your vocal range is impressive and controlled and well employed for emotional impact. Your lyrics are lovely; storylike, emotive and passionate. Again marry me. Why 4 stars? no that anyone cares; one if I gave you 5 stars then I'd want to be groupie and then you'd dismiss my review as partisan bile and you'd overlook a great artists work and two she hasn't married me as yet... :).

I can't remember the last time I bought myself a music CD (they're usually all for my kids) but I'm so glad I treated myself to this one. Adrina has a fantastic voice and "Round the Bend" gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Listening to this CD makes my ironing sessions a joy - and that's a first! Can't wait for more.

  • Nothing Short Of Graceful.
    author: Bret

Adrina requested an add from me on my MySpace, and I'm so glad she did it. She is a truly remarkable artist on the rise. Upon first listen, without the knowledge that she is in the midst of becoming the next Sarah McLachlan and the like, you may already believe she's at that point. Her music is mystic, ethereal and graceful. Delicate vocals, inspiring lyrics and absolutely beautiful melodies pull you in for a well rounded listen. One of this world's true artists. Thanks Adrina!

  • Love it
    author: Charlie

I love Adrina's album because the music aims directly for the heart. And there is a lot of variety in the songs - from lovely ballads like "Elusive" or "Wistful" to pop like "More than seventeen" and almost a dance track like "Never meant". My favourite is "Round the bend". Adrina almost cries out the refrain in the end and gives me goosebumps. PRETTY!

    author: Jim

This is a solid effort throughout. Adrina Thorpe's music comes from the heart, and touches the soul with many emotions. On hearing "Did You Think," I realized I just had to have this awesome collection of music. Adrina's voice is so beautifully expressive throughout each selection. I've owned this CD for months, and I still play it regularly. It's one of the best CDs in my collection and easily the best CD I've purchased in some time. Highly recommended!

  • A stunning performer - one of the top artists in podcasting.
    author: PMC Top 10 Countdown

Adrina's "Fly" debuted at #9 in the PMC Top10 and is showing no signs of slowing. It is a soulful, touching song that you can listen to over and over.

  • This is one album that will brighten your day!
    author: Bill McBlain

Phil Swann tells about Adrina very well, but from my listening many times to this album, I have grown to love it! What beautiful, romantic and up-building thoughts are contained in these songs. Also songs beautiful sung by a voice well trained by its owner. Some albums just sit around, but "Elusive" you will play, as I do, over and over.

  • You'll go everywhere
    author: Paul

This CD starts with an upbeat tune that will pump you up better than coffee, then relax you and indeed make you feel "Wistful." After hearing that sweet voice, you can't believe it's her singing "Sorry" and "Didn't Mean." And then it finishes with two of the most romantic pieces I've heard in a long time. Right now this CD is my all-time fave.

  • Brilliant album by a fantastic singer
    author: Trevor & Thea

This is a great CD. Thoughtful songs beautifully written, beautifully arranged, beautifully performed and beautifully sung. Adrina draws deeply at the well of a host of great female singersongwriters from Carole King through to Tori Amos without ever falling into the trap of trying to clone or copy them. It's a heritage and influence thing. The songs range from intimate piano ballads to up tempo pop songs while touching in issues which speak of life rather than the usual singer-songwriter cliches. Adrina's amazing voice adapts and excells at all these styles. Whispering gently in your ear on the acoustic ballads and soaring out of your speakers for the rockier songs. Not many CDs don't have a weak track, your average CD usually has at least one filler - Elusive isn't an average CD. Since I bought it Elusive hasn't come off my personal playlist. Wonderful set of songs by a very bright new talent!

  • Easily one of the best albums I've purchased...
    author: A.J.

There is not a single track on this CD I did not enjoy listening to. Each one was different from the other and they don’t become tiresome no matter how many times you listen to them! This artist possesses all of the qualities, which it takes to make great music. Adrina has a wonderful voice and she writes spectacular songs which makes this CD one of the best albums I have ever purchased.

    author: David Pena

    author: Scott Hanley

...and the other 3 are real good too! It has been a long time since I have been jazzed about so many songs on one disc. Adrina has an amazing ability to take you on 3 or 4 minute journeys and surround you with a voice and melodic feel that is near perfection.
