Album Notes

Afrissippi's Alliance the is follow up CD to the critically-acclaimed 2006 debut, Fulani Journey. This is the second chapter in the evolving story of West African griot Guelel Kumba and his band of North Mississippi juke joint musicians. The live recording took place over the course of one day at Jimbo Mathus' Delta Recording Service in Como, Mississippi and was produced by Mathus. Kinney Kimbrough is on drums with RL Burnside's apprentice, Eric Deaton, on guitar. Justin Showah (Taylor Grocery Band) joins on bass and Papa Assane M'Baye from West Africa on percussion. Afrissippi further explores the connections between Kumba's dense, melodic compositions and the rhythms of the North Mississippi Hill Country juke joint groove. But the band also delves into Delta blues, highlifesque grooves, ancient drum-based recitations, and call and response.
The result is the ultimate world boogie party album!
