In 1986, Pat Funderburg designed “Exercise to Afro-Rhythms” to add variety to her demanding workout schedule. She combined her love of dance with her commitment to fitness. She recalled the dance classes that moved her the most always involved live drumming. The result of the combination became a fun and invigorating workout often described as “exercise to a different beat.” Pat has taught fitness for more than 20 years. Her husband, Ron, has played conga drums and percussion for over 25 years. They decided to combine their talents and developed Pat Funderburg’s Exercise to Afro-Rhythms as a fitness program with an africentric flavor that appeals to all cultures and ages.
Throughout her fitness career, Pat has been sensitive to all participants regardless of body size, fitness level, or age. It is important to allow everyone to feel comfortable and provide necessary (for some) modifications to the movements to lower the intensity of the workout. Pat also teaches the steps slowly so that all can learn the movements. The workout is both challenging and fun for everyone. It has been said that Afro-Rhythms reaches one’s body, mind, and spirit and is a joyous celebration of life.
Affectionately known as “Pat’s Afro-Rhythms,” the class provides graceful creative movements as an integral part of the workout. These movements enhance a natural urge to move to the rhythms. Afro-Rhythms was originally envisioned as an incentive for people of color to incorporate fitness into their lives. The heartbeat sound of the drums, however, cross all cultures and adds the important element of spirituality.
Pat’s drummers come from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Their presence and energy embellish the dance movements. The interaction of the drummers reminds us that movements, rituals and rhythms are part of a rich musical heritage and history. It is a connection to ancestors, the earth, elements, and all living things.
“Pat’s Afro-Rhythms” has been endorsed by the Ohio Minority Health Institute, Columbus Black Women’s Health Project’s Walk for Wellness, the Ohio Commission on Minority Health, American Heart Association, OhioHealth’s Doin’ The Right Healthy Thing, Franklin County Area Agency on Aging, My Brother’s Keeper at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, and numerous others. Pat and “Afro-Rhythns” has also received a “thumbs up” approval from nationally known, fitness guru, Donna Richardson.
Pat and Ron, happily married over thirty years, live in Columbus, Ohio. For class, lecture or training information, contact 614/258-5465.
