Can't keep simple simple, can you?
author: Lewis Frape - Drummer / Songwriter (UK)
It's early days - I've probably only listened to this album about 30 times. It's a bit over-produced for my taste; it took me a long time to get used to the 80s sounds in Guilty Girl; and I'm still a little uncomfortable with squealing lead guitar licks blended in like accessories. That's because this album is orchestral. It's big, and it demands listening to over and over again - each time I discover something new.
The lyrical content is massive - not lots and lots of different words but just really evocative expressions without the need for the melodrama of goth/metal/downer bands - and "love" songs done in a way I can never achieve (I always get stuck in either twee or obscene).
Yes, the move to USA is reflected in the exponential increase of gun references, however subtle, and I miss the grammatic strength of lines like the liquor store owner (though there's a great triple-negative in LCD)
Like someone said in an earlier review - no weak tracks here (although I did used to ffwd the end of Help Me!)
Heading For the LCD (actually kinda works if this a TV or PC reference too) is a great grumpy look at our dumbed-down world - I'm with you 100%.
No Straight Lines is just beautifully done, this track often gets "Repeat Track" in my car.
Eternity's Rainbow is clearly a much older track - less wisdom and more poetry, still can't get over the tears/cauldron lyric - genius!
Gotta love it

“There Are No Straight Lines in Nature” That gives you something to think about…which is what I like most about this album. All the songs are written with seasoned intelligence, but without force or effort. Aidan tells his and our life stories through witty lyrics and compelling music. Cleverly produced and arranged; I love the fusing of musical styles and choice of instruments used. I feel this combination has resulted in the making of a great record. I’m a sucker for Power Ballads, so “For You” is number one for me. Thanks, Cheers and all the Best!

The long awaited return of a great songwriter.

It is great to see Aidan Nolan back doing what he does best, writing songs that you just can't get out of your head. The sound of this album is very different from his debut, 'Tales From The Sun', in that the production this time around is much more spectacular. There are no weak tracks here, every song is well written and skilfully produced. Anybody who is a fan of great songwriting will appreciate and enjoy this album. I'm looking forward to hearing a lot more from Aidan Nolan in the not to distant future.

Bloody Good Album!
author: Robert Knicker
I must admit that when I first listened to No Straight Lines I didn't really like it that much. However, as with all the best albums, it takes two or three listens right through to start really getting into it, not just liking the obvious radio cuts but the album as a whole… one continuous thread if you will. The songwriting here is inspired, as is the production work and every track works perfectly together. I know everyone has a favorite song (mine is Heading For The LCD) but be sure you give the whole album a few listens right through, it really is more than the sum of its parts.
