Album Notes

This brand new CD, "Like Hannah" is her 7th CD. It is released on her own label, Bera Records. People often find it difficult to categorize Aiko's music since different people hear different musical elements in her music. Often the descriptions are total opposite, depends on who listens. This CD features her own band members including Dave Carter (flugel horn), Dave Brogan (drums) and Mark Collins (upright bass). Special guest appearances by Troy Swanson (Corpus Callosome - handmade instruments), Paul Moore (accordion), and Hannah Joan McCarthy (her 1 year-old niece).

REVIEWS

Beautiful, complex and original music

The best artist I've heard in years. Her music is never derivative sounding or overly predicatable, at the same time it is accessible and emotionally moving. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Aiko and Hannah's Mojo

It has airy passages, like a lot of modern folk (or New-Age-Passing-For-Folk) excursions, but it also has dark, sinewy little hooks that dig in and stay in one's mind long after the CD is over. It wanders, but it never leaves you without a trail of breadcrumbs with which to find your way home. Or something. :o Way to go, Ms. Shimada. :)

I am hooked on this CD!

I was driving down a crowded freeway when I first listened to this CD. Suddenly, the frustrations and anxiety of freeway driving disappeared, and my mind was filled with the intriguing sounds of this group. From the first words, "Walk with me...through this place," I was completely hooked. Each song offers creative textures of gentle horn, percussion, and bass with Aiko's amazing voice, a voice that reaches inside, makes my heart warm. There is something about this music that makes me feel introspective yet somehow happy in a simple, carefree way.

One of CD Baby's favorite artists, this woman never ceases to amaze and indulge the emotions and imagination, with a stunning and original, reflective sound that falls somewhere in the open expanse between the dark and shadowy corners of the subconscious and the dazzling and penetrated realms of the mind. This gorgeous album seems to exist in those multiple worlds simultaneously- dipping deeply into a rich harmonic palette of jazz, the light accessible delivery of folk and the bright immediacy of pop. If for no other reason, find out why CD Baby employees get a spring in their step at the mentioning of this woman. Aiko redefines the bounds of the word "lush."
