Album Notes

Angela Jui Lee, gu-zheng master, was born in China, and is a bicultural and trilingual Chinese-American. She was tutored by Master gu-zheng artists Liang Zei Ping, Wei De-Liang and Li Ying.

"The Moon Is High" contains 7 selections of traditional Chinese music in her own arrangements for solo gu-zheng. It follows the success of her 1998 "Heart's Strings" CD. But where the earlier CD is largely meditative and introspective, "The Moon Is High" features performances which are more exuberant and outwardly expressive in character, and features the 23-string and 25-string gu-zhengs which were made especially for Ms. Lee. (The standard gu-zheng used by most professionals has only 21 strings.)

Utilizing these instruments and her own highly personalized arrangements, Ms. Lee explores an unprecedented expressive power beyond the confines of more traditional recordings.

* All arrangements are by Angela Jui Lee, and are published by Lux Nova Press http://www.luxnova.com/. Broadcast rights are ASCAP. Ms. Lee records exclusively on the T'ang Dragon label. She is available for solo recitals and lecture-demonstations. For booking information, see the artist's website at http://www.ajlee.com/

Magnificent
author: Kara
This is a CD of guzheng music that is so evocative. While you expect flowing and pensive moods (which this delivers), the surprise is Lee's strength and passion on other selections. She has such "infinite variety" (as Shakespeare said of Cleopatra) on this CD, which is a joy to the listener, and inspiring for other musicians.

beautiful-simply beautiful!

There's something special about real Chinese traditional music which is so unique it's impossible to describe. Add to that the utterly unique sound of a Gu zheng, and the result sounds like nothing else I've ever heard. The tracks on this cd are well chosen, beautiful pieces of music played with style, passion, and a lot of skill. I've never heard anything as beautiful, except A J Lee's other cd,"hearts strings". Buy it-you won't regret it!

Indeed, no instrument is more deeply evocative of China itself. [...] The performances are hauntingly beautiful and linger long after you've heard them.
