Masterpeace es el segundo álbum de solos de piano del compositor, productor y pianista Joseph Akins. Un trabajo impresionante, con una grandísima calidad en la producción y de desbordante sentimiento y frescura; compuesto por nueve fascinantes piezas llenas de sensibilidad y emoción (de gran duración) que trasladan al oyente a hermosos lugares y momentos de paz. Para ello, Joseph se ha rodeado de grandes profesionales como Michael Fleming y Randy LeRoy, que han mezclado y masterizado todas los temas que ha compuesto e interpretado Joseph en un Yamaha FDIII de nueve pies.
 
"Masterpeace" es la pieza que abre el álbum y que da título a este trabajo. Un track de más de seis minutos que cautiva al oyente;  desde su comienzo hasta su fin esta pieza con toque romántico es una delicia para el oído. Una melodía que fluye lenta al principio, y con toque melancólico, abre paso a un sonido esperanzador y emocionante. Simplemente... Wow!.
"Cane Creek" comienza con rasgueos de acordes que continúan pausados, tristes. Es pasado el minuto de reproducción cuando la pieza muestra su verdadero sentimiento; un estribillo en el que ambas manos parecen mantener una conversación, dando vida a una emocionante y pegadiza melodía. Hermosa pieza!.
"Joy of Being" posee una de las más tiernas melodías del álbum, con un toque optimista Joseph ha creado una canción con una fuerte personalidad, donde la mano derecha reproduce una pegadiza sintonía, mientras la mano izquierda marca fuertemente los acordes. Pura alegría!.
"Finding Grace" es la pieza más extensa del álbum, más de ocho minutos y medio. "Finding Grace" no sumerge en momentos de reflexión. Idóneo para encontrar calma. La melodía es misteriosa en su comienzo, hasta pasados los dos minutos que comienza a fortalecerse hasta su cenit, despuntando con un emocionante estribillo. Impresionante tema desde su comienzo hasta su final!. 
"In the Country" quizás una de las piezas más alegres de este trabajo. La melodía principal del tema nace desde el comienzo, es la introducción y el estribillo. Joseph da vida a una grácil melodía, y nos muestra su dulce técnica, arrancando con rápidos toques de notas y acordes del Yamaha la más mágica de las canciones. Bellísima!.
"Present Moment". Notas altas dan paso a un toque continuado de acordes en la zona baja del teclado, lo que aporta al tema un toque de misterio; mientras, la mano derecha reproduce un canción con numerosos silencios. No es hasta el minuto dos cuando la melodía descansa al oído dando paso a la calma. Hipnotizadora pieza!.
"Journey Home" es la alegría de ver, que después de un largo viaje, corto es el trayecto que resta hasta llegar al hogar; Joseph refleja perfectamente ese momento. La melodía es pegadiza, como en los temas anteriores, y va cogiendo fuerza y rapidez. Un tema divertido de tocar, seguro!, y donde se puede imaginar con facilidad el baile de manos de Joseph sobre el teclado. Sublime!.
"Keys to the Heart" es desconcertante en su comienzo. Pero una serie de preguntas que reproduce la mano izquierda  es respondida por la mano derecha... Y de repente, la melodía es enérgica, fuerte. Las manos vuelan por el teclado, dando vida a una bella y rápida canción. Cautivadora!.
"Inner Space" es el track que cierra el álbum. Un repique continuado de notas bajas sirven de base a una melodía pausada, entrecortada creada por la mano derecha. Una profunda melodía, perfecta para momentos de introspección, que va sorprendiendo al oyente con algunos toques improvisados de las notas más altas. Misteriosa e introspectiva!.
 
Masterpeace es un álbum muy recomendado!. Idóneo para la evasión y la relajación, para momentos de calma y perfecto para una escucha en plena contemplación de la belleza de todo aquello que rodea al oyente.

"Masterpeace" is one of these CD's that they make impressed once you have listened to it. All, absolutely all the tracks are impressive. The sticky melody of each one of the tracks they remain caught in the head, giving a very personal touch to Akins's piano, which once listened is easily identifiable.

I give it the highest punctuation!. Congratulation for so good work Joseph!!!!.

“Masterpeace” is pianist/composer Joseph Akins’ first solo release in ten years. A professor of recording industry at Middle Tennessee State University, Akins recorded this beautiful album on a Yamaha CFIII concert grand, and the sound quality is amazing.  The title track arrived one day when Akins was improvising at the piano, after several years of “writer’s block.” Once that piece was realized, the music started coming almost faster than Akins could play it. The result is an exceptional piano CD designed for relaxation and to quiet the listener’s world. The nine tracks are all original compositions, and a few include keyboard washes for color. 

As a young teenager, Akins played keyboards and saxophone in his father’s country-rock band in Tennessee, and occasionally you can hear a touch of that influence. As a college student, he played in rock bands and then turned to jazz. The death of his father and a health problem that challenged his music career changed Akins’ perspective on life as well as music. “Music became much more than notes and rhythms. It became about feeling emotions, expressing the soul, and helping others.” That focus is very apparent in Akins’ music, and his deep involvement in so many different kinds of music has helped him to create a musical voice that is uniquely his own while being universally understandable.

The title track opens the CD. Warm, inviting, and very calming, it is a lovely way to start!  “Cane Creek” is blissfully serene with a lazy tempo and gentle flow. Keyboard washes create a sense of mystery and of seeking. “Finding Grace” is one of my favorites. A little darker than some of the others, there is a real poignance to the music. The slow melody and occasional discordance bring out the introspective nature of the piece - deeply emotional thinking at the piano. “In the Country” hints at Nashville piano legend Floyd Cramer. Leisurely and easy-going, images of a restful day in nature come floating through as the music plays. “Journey Home” is another beauty. Thoughtful and reflective, this one is a little more dramatic than some, offering passion as well as contentment. “Keys to the Heart” is my favorite. Shown as a “bonus track” on the CD, this piece was an expression of Akins’ grief from losing his father, but also expresses the peace that comes with the acceptance of one of life’s most difficult challenges. A testament to the healing qualities of music, this piece also celebrates life and feels like a tribute. Emotionally complex and absolutely honest, this is a truly great piece! I also really like “Inner Space,” another bonus track. More improvised and free-form, the repetitive left hand keeps the floating right hand somewhat grounded as it dances all over the piano. 

“Masterpeace” is a great album for relaxing and unwinding. I don’t recommend trying to wake up with it! Joseph Akins is off to a very promising fresh start, and we’ll hope that the music keeps flowing.
