Alalie Lilt started as a trio formed by singer/songwriter Clara back in 1999. Clara has been writing songs for a while influenced by feminist musicians like Ani DiFranco, Sarah Dougher and Sleater-Kinney. With the band expanding to a six-piece group, the music got more diverse and more difficult to label.
Instruments like accordion, violine, flute and piano emphasize the moods of Clara's songs which all have one thing in common: the struggle with words, the question of how much our language defines our view of the world, our perception. The band's name - Alalie Lilt - refers to that struggle: Alalie means "without a tongue" in ancient greek and "to lilt" means to sing, so what you hear now is the "singing speechlessness" - or so.
"Cylopedia" is the band's first CD, recorded within 10 hours in October 2002. Highlights are certainly the driven "Dry" which features Veronika on accordion and Jutta on violine and "Bicycle Ride" which tackles the question of safe spaces for women and the permanent threat of male violence against women.
