notes
Alamantra is a three piece band hailing from the Magic City. They are extremely versatile and eclectic in their approach, preferring inspired, impulsive and creative musical adventures over the cheap, formula oriented 'material' that is created for mass consumption by 'the industry'. Their music is moody and insightful, with each project being distinctly different from the last. Featuring a catalog of over 200 original songs, their music touches upon just about every conceivable genre: Old School Punk, Psychedelia, Hard Rock, Jazz, Folk, Country, Blues and plain ol' sonic improvisation. Their fans recognize them as one of the more intense live acts in the South East, putting on an energetic if unpredictable show. The one thing that this band has is a sense of chemistry that they combine with a pro-active message. They use the music to promote causes that they believe in such as the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN www.rainn.org) and The Arbor Day Foundation (www.arborday.org). They are also firm believers in the DIY (Do It Yourself) independent music scene.
Having played together in one project or another since 1993, each member is a seasoned veteran musician
Drummer Kenny Shiflett has played everything from jazz to old school punk to groove rock; and having begun playing drums at the age of three, is a prodigy in his own right and is the heartbeat of Alamantra.
Bassist Andrew Reid has played in a wide variety of bands. In "Grass" from Starkville Mississippi, he played the roots-rock/jam circuit. He has also played in stoner and thrash metal bands such as Molehill and Lamenstra, although he is equally at home playing Rush or even jazz. Andrew believes in the local music scene so much that he once operated an all ages venue in Birmingham called The Boiler Room, which hosted many memorable acts such as The Misfits and Marky Ramone.
Bobby Shiflett, their principle songwriter, was formally schooled in both classical and jazz guitar, having, once upon a time, attended the Alabama School of Fine Arts; but prefers that old grungy rock sound stylized by masters like Neil Young, Buck Dharma and Jimmy Page. In addition to being a songwriter, Bobby, writing under the name of Alamantra, is an activist, philosopher, humanist, and an informed writer on esoteric subjects. (see http://www.greaterthelema.org) This has led to a sort of local reputation as a sort of wizard or illuminatus, breeding strange rumors and legends which he takes an infinite, mischievous sort of delight in; although he has admitted that he was, at one time, initiated into Ordo Templi Orientis. He is also a published poet.
They consider a wide range of influences including (but not limited to): Sun Ra, Beatles, Sonic Youth, Neil Young, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Rush, The Pixies, The Who, 7 Seconds, The Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, XTC and X. This band is for people looking for something different than all of the pulp that is being spoon-fed by the music industry. Even though "Alternative" has become just another cheap, meaningless TV-Dinner label, these guys offer up "the real thing," that they made themselves out of their love of playing music.
