ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A combination of 5 string 7,9 and 11 string bass. I dream of a world where all bassist and arrangers can walk hand in hand and..somebody stop me! :-)
This bass project was created as an example of ERB possibilities. I'm playing the guitar sounds on my 9 or 11 string bass. Some of the keyboard parts and
horn solo's are from my MIDI basses. I love melody. I look forward to exploring the unlimited possibilities of these instruments. I still love to play my Adler 5 string bass or my Benavente 5 string Jazz bass. The meat and potato of bass is still playing in the pocket. I hope you like the grooves that i've come up with. I use the Extended Range Basses as a synth player would control an array of sounds. I'm working on music from a new perspective for me. Music is the richest form of art to me. It's Sonic Power! I hope you enjoy the music. I really love to play and the 11 string bass is my greatest challenge. This tool will help me find the sounds that have elluded me as a foundation player. I named the cd "Forbidden" because of the rules I intend to break. In my mind.......I hear......MUSIC!! Al Caldwell

Excellent, like a 5 star meal! Jazz,blues,funk,smooth & cool!
I felt the cd "Forbidden" by Al Caldwell is a "buffet" of sounds and styles that are "cooked" just right like my Mother's collards. Track 1 starts smoking, and then it gets smooth/cool,funky and jazzy. I saw images of people dancing, and having a good time during the track "Harlem High." I highly recommend this cd.

On the edge
As musicians we tend to get jaded and/or set in our ways. Usually resisting new genres of music or flipping our noses to things like bass albums. OR worse resting on our laurels. Not Al. This lastest work by Al Caldwell is on the edge and I love it. It's raw, it's smooth and it keeps you on your toes. Come on now? How often do you get to hear a burning bassist playing 11 strings and not sound like a guitar-wanna-bee? These aren't recycled bass licks but intense musical statements that we thrive for when we've been gigging complacently tyring to make a living as sidemen. Al shows there's more to him and his 11 strings: there's musicality that seeks creativity in a world driven by digital perfection. My favorite cuts "No Punks allowed", "Forbidden" and "Boppin in St. Louis." A must for your bass burning genre collection.

a refreshing voice that musicaly touches the soul
Al Caldwell is a much needed and refreshing voice on electric Bass today, whether he's playing 4 5,9,or 11 string electric Bass(and he's just as talented on Banjo,Drums,Guitar and Keyboards)no aspect of his playing is over bearing.especially in this new found realm of hanger ons, wannabees and posers.Throughout his music one can not only hear but feel every note that he has chosen, serves a vital purpose throughout his musical journey.Al's music is multi dimensional and thru it all he still finds just the right amount of space to hold it all together with a groove that subliminally pulls you in,again a refreshing voice, one that is so much needed today.
