"Freedom in the Cave" was recorded live on Alcibiades Jones' Tour of New England in the fall of 2005. The album contains almost all new material and explores the band's blistering live dynamics.
Alcibiades Jones is Austin Barney (Guitar), Stuart Watson (Bass, Guitar, Rhodes, Drums), and Alex Zanecchia (Drums, Guitar). 2005's "Refraction Mirage" charted on several major market independent music charts, and music from the album has been used by A&E Network and on PBS's "Roadtrip nation."
The funk metal tune "Neapolitan Sky" opens the disc, followed by the contemplative and uplifting "Oslo," a meditation on Scandinavian influences in world history.
Next is "Rockstar," an idiosyncratic dream labyrinth featuring Rhodes, guitar, and bass. This song flows directly into "Star Country," an explosive jam recorded live in Simsbury, CT.
"Socrates Blues" extends the themes of the group's earlier "Aristotle Blues." "Clarel," named for Melville's sojourning hero, is an impromptu funk experiment.
"Openness Fragment" features role reversal, with Watson on drums and Zanecchia on guitar (Barney lays out).
"Green Tea" is the only track reprised from Refraction Mirage. The album closes with the epic "Locust Soiree/Broken World", an engrossing progressive jam that combines themes and melodies written throughout the band's seven year existence.
