The Rise and Fall is an ambitious endeavor of Homeric proportions, although at times the lucky listener will have trouble deciding whether it's mythic trappings are closer to the Homer of "the Odyssey" or "the Simpsons." It is an epic saga of unquenched desire, passionate causes, political upheaval, human pathos, inevitable hubris and enlightened curiosity told in a series of original pop vignettes in various and sundry styles. And if interesting themes, creative arrangements and pop crafsmanship are not enough to convince discriminating shoppers to sample the goods, they should also consider that, if a scientific survey were conducted (and I'm not saying that it wasn't), nine out of ten dentists would recommend this CD for their patients who chew gum.
