Alec Julien is a composer and jazz guitarist who grew up hating composers and jazz. He learned to compose jazz tunes because he was sick of playing standards.
"Walking Tunes" is a collection of quirky, original jazz tunes. The tunes aren't quite like anything you're used to hearing, but not so weird that they'll leave you scratching your head. Someone once described the music as "like a burrito with frosting." We're not quite sure what that means. But through a miasma of chords and time signature changes, some kind of strange simplicity surfaces. Tunes you can sort of hum along with. Sort of. Tunes you can walk to.
Musicians:
Guitar: Alec Julien. Hates the fact that when he tells people he's a guitarist, they look at him like he's a guitarist.
Flute: Patricia Julien. Sweetest flute player in all the land. Those in the know call her "doctor".
Bass: Jeremy Harlos. Best bassist ever to attend Bennington College. Knows a lot of math.
Drums: Steve Wienert. Tastiest drummer in Northern Vermont. Best player ever to drop out of Goddard College.

Easy listening
author: Helen Rice
When I closed my eyes to listen, I went from a walk in Gramercy Park through other streets of New York. The guitar stands out for me, peaceful easy. Though I don't usually listen to jazz (being from the Big Band era) I found this music soothing -- perhaps as you say, simply simple. Good job!
