Album Notes

"A lush, invigorating romp of music and poetry. Percussion, flutes, voices, guitars, horns, ambient forest sounds, satire, seriousness, playfulness: “Songs of Hope and Protest” explodes with Alex Weiss’s sharp wit and musicality. Prepare to be soothed, agitated, and entertained."
North Carolina Author,
Bob slentz-Kesler June, 2008

Since 1968 multi-instrumentalist Alex Weiss has been a trans-cultural magnet of musical styles from Africa & the Americas. Alex’s creative approach of blending melody & rhythm are always unique and recognizable; from composing horn lines over West African rhythms, to playing South African township tunes merengue style or re-writing old calypso songs with contemporary socio-political commentary. On Alex’s latest CD “Songs of Hope & Protest” he has come around full circle. While still incorporating the Afro/Caribbean flavor, the focus is derived from folk music USA. The inspiration for this CD comes from Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte, and the countless others who have spoken through their life & music for justice, human rights, and the vision of a better world.
