Throughout time…heartache over a lost love has pushed people to do crazy and sometimes amazing things. In Alfonso Tellez Jr’s case an unrequited love opened up a whole new world for the Texas born and Minnesota raised singer/songwriter/composer.
“I was never into choir or anything music based in school,” says Alfonso. “I didn’t really listen to music at all.” That changed when the then 19-year-old began putting his feelings down on paper as a form of therapy after a girl broke his heart. Since then he has released five CD’s featuring his special blend of pop, Latin and classical music.
Influenced by greats like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and classical composer Antonio Vivaldi, Alfonso started out by humming his ideas into a small digital recorder. This technique allowed him to come up with catchy melodies which he then translated to full songs, all the time playing keyboard and piano by ear.
His first CD titled Complicated was released independently in December of 2006. The release was Alfonso’s introduction to the pop music world. In between the release of Complicated and Alfonso’s sophomore release (Classical Movement Vol. 1) in 2009, he branched out as an artist, adding classical music to his repertoire.
Taking a different lane was a risk that paid off for Alfonso as audiences embraced his work in both genres. “When choosing the two I didn’t know what was going to happen,” says Alfonso. “I didn’t know if I should have stayed in pop or gone fully classical but the overall reaction to both styles has been positive.”
Having only released two albums over the first four years of his career, Alfonso challenged himself to release three full projects per year. He fulfilled that goal in 2010 by releasing two classical albums (Classical Movement Vol. 2 and Accelerando) and a pop project titled My Time.
Alfonso has already started on more new releases for 2011, including a follow up to his first CD featuring songs that did not make the cut titled Complicated: The Lost Tracks plus another classical and pop album.
If that was not enough, the Full Sail graduate is currently working on television, film and video game scoring.
Though he got into music late in life Alfonso has since realized that music is his niche in life and he hasn’t looked back since. Now that is how you turn heartbreak into something amazing.
