Poetic !
author: Laura TLynch of Kweevak.com
Alice Despard's poetic observations were composed over a period of time exploring a range of experiences and emotions. The CD was recorded with Mark Doyon in one long session allowing the moods and music to just flow. This format works well for Alice and her professional crew. Her songs are acoustic based with a city flair. The production is stark allowing Alice's lush lyrics and dramatic vocals to dominate, yet there is just the right mix of rhythms (bass and drums), guitars, a lap steel and an occasional tambourine. I liked the blend of edginess and soul on the first and last tracks best, although the album as a whole has a lot of offer. 'The Well' features interesting chord structures and 'Hold You Up' glimmers before and after the snappy hook line. Alice Despard is poised and her latest release is smart and significant!

Gorgeous!

This is beautiful work. Anyone familiar with other recordings by Alice Despard will be struck by how much the clarity of her voice on this disc hooks even deeper into the marrow of your bones. In contrast to the previous recording of the song "Vessel", the stripped down version of that song on this album highlights a vulnerable quality in Alice's voice and lyrics that soars and stuns, the kind of performance that sucks the breath out of your lungs. Gorgeous.

Another great Alice disk
author: Tim Reed
All of Alice Despard's disks are great, and this is no exception. Very light, up-front production style, more spare than her previous works. Mostly songs from earlier in her career redone and reworked. Once new song that's awesome. Really great record - if you're a fan of hers, of the DC scene, of singer/songwriters or indie rock, this is worth picking up.

FANTASTIC CD!
author: Paul Golder
Surprising. Remarkable. Just a Fantastic CD. I was blown away. An INCREDIBLE vocal and lyric, great playing/ensemble performance, and powerful, resonant, IMMEDIATE production. Such a great vibe and message. I loved all the songs, but Track 1 "The Well" and Track 9 "Hold You Up" are just standout -- beautiful, transcendant, rocking, moments. Thanks very much.
