notes
"Angels Near" is like a poker game with Stevie Nicks portrayed as the dealer, Tori Amos laying down a royal flush and Evanescence's Amy Lee folding. It's a dark collection of moody and intimate songs that flirt with tragic and haunting melodies. Alice Marie uses stretched out vocals to pierce through the lyrics, adding an eerie tone to the mood of the release. The title song, "Angels Near," a song about personal bouts of pain and fear, includes an unexpected change of emotion with a "carnival" flashback of sorts complete with roller coasters and carnival music. It's a very modern, dark outlook on the singer-songwriter's life displayed collectively in ten tracks of deep, poet lyrics. "Angels Near" is packed full of Alice Marie's raw, edgy talent. It's one beautiful song after another complete with a stunning voice sure to please any music fan.

SHRINE FOR THE BLACK MADONNA
I'm not sure why I was expecting soft McLachlan-ish pop from Alice Marie (I think it's because of the song of hers that appears on Undiscovered Gems) but I was wrong. Alice Marie gets right out of the gate rocking with the first track, "It's Amazing."
"Angels Near" almost has an 80s new wave sound. I especially like the carnival sound in the middle.
"I Was Seven" is downright scary as she pleads with her imaginary friend taken from books to save her from...well...just listen. At times this song reminds me of early Tori Amos.
This is a good solid recording from an artist who is not mainstream sounding and has a lot to say.

COLLECTED SOUNDS
For her second CD called Angels Near, Alice Marie was ready for her close-up. From the intimate cover portrait to the soul-excavating songs, she doesn't shy away from truth. Or desire. And most definitely not her spirituality.
In the title track, you can hear the rumble of a roller coaster and screams to go with it; listening to the CD as a whole requires some seatbelt-fastening as Alice, an artist featured on Virt Records' Undiscovered Gems, takes you through her lows -- molestation, depression, and her response to 9/11 -- and highs -- finding love, appreciating the life she almost took, and getting anything but metaphysical in the seductive "Bring the Guitar."
Alice's songs have aired on Sirius Satellite Radio and Plum TV, plus numerous podcasts and Internet radio stations, and she has appeared at The Bitter End, Arlene's Grocery, Borders Books, The Living Room, 17, Maxwell's in Hoboken, and Balboa Park in San Diego.
Three of her songs from Angels Near have been chosen for Mamapalooza Vol. 2 and a CD to raise money for RAINN called Mindful Lullabies.

there is gold out there - i found it here
author: fingers flynnthis is really good - ignore the star-rating (these are so arbitrary) the music is evocative of a few things but is easily good enough to be above such crass comparisons.
Strong CD
author: CharlieAt first I was disappointed because there is no new "Madeleine" on this CD. But there are other great songs like "Easy streets" or "Bring the guitar" that I love and enjoy listening to very much. And it is nice to have a full-length CD by Alice Marie that you can play over and over. She has a cool voice and is a very good songwriter. Love it!
Alice Marie shares her genius again with Angels Near!
author: ~sAngels Near takes us on a Journey of Spirit, which conjures up contrasting images of darkness/light and fragility/strength. Alice Marie weaves through a haunted world which is transformed into a triumphant state of grace. Thank you to Alice for sharing this journey with us~

What a find!
author: Dan OakenheadThis is great work! I already know that I'll be wanting to listen to this one over and over. I gravitate to music with artistic expression, inventiveness, and lyrical depth. Alice Marie's got all of those and more. This is music that you don't just hear, you develop a relationship with it. What a find - literate lyrics! And a voice like the sky singing through the deep forest.
Healing Starts Right Here
author: Joe CahillI met Alice Marie some six months ago at a cabaret in Montclair, NJ where we were both singing. Alice performed Could It Be and I was Seven. After hearing several songs from the Angels Near CD, I purchased it and boought Equilibrium; much to the delight of Alice Marie. In Angels Near, Alice continues the musical life journey which she started on her EP Equilibrium. Angels Near tackles the valleys and peaks of Alice's life; child molestation (I Was Seven) depression (It's Amazing) and the joys of marriage, motherhood and music(More). Fans of Equilibrium will find much to treasure in Angels Near. There are beautiful ballads; Bridges, Daddy's Song and songs with attitude, Could it Be and Bring The Guitar. There's Alice's smooth, silky at times edgy vocals, her glowing piano work and the fast driving guitars. The ten song set delves into a variety of Mod Rock stylings, and sound effects, starting with a kiddie roller coaster ride at the opening of I Was Seven and a busy signal at the end of Could It be. There are more changes in tempo here, to fit the mood of each song. Bridges is a beautiful Rock BAllad with echo effects at the closing bars. It's melodic timbre is reminiscent of earlier songs such as Lipstick Diaries. The song is telling because it reveals Alice's journey from dark depression to a cross roads where she finds herself still standing and ready to cross over into a better place. Angels Near, the title track is about healing. It has the Eastern, New Age Rock Sound of Madeleine and the drive of So Long. But she chooses different endings for these songs. many end almost with a question hanging in the air; they end like short-short stories. But Alice doesn't leave the listener hanging at album's end; you get a triumphant Rock Anthem sound for the close of More. To sum it all up; Alice Marie's Angels Near is an autobiography set to music; a great Hope Opera.

Amazing Music In true Poetic style
author: Jane LaRoseIn true Poetic style, Alice Marie's lyrics draws us into our own emotions and brings us to our own heart, almost wishing we wrote the song. Upon hearing only a few bars of her music on the Internet, I purchased her CD recognizing her genius. It is Amazing, serious and comic with rhythms to match her astonishing voice. I loved every cut on her CD. It's production impeccable and I would recommend to anyone who loved Annie Lennox or Peter Gabriel to add this to their collection.

author: zoe blotnickin short, it's amazing. deep. soulful. enchanting.
Powerful music from a rockin' good soul.
author: NANCY RINGFalling somewhere sylistically between Merchant and Morisette with a healthy dash of the smokey rock poet cool of Patty Smith , Angels Near is a gift. Alicemarie's agile voice - at times whispering, belting or climbing to ecstatic highs - is the perfect vehicle for her multi-layered emotion-driven songs. The pay-off is in the layers, which reveal the generous, rockin' good soul of this talented artist.
Amazing, spiritual and honest. The music stays with you.
author: Lauren BAll of Alice Marie's songs come from her heart so her lyrics naturally sing to your heart. If you're looking for music that will stir the angels near you to come close . . . look no further.
This CD rocks!
author: Deloras LaneThis CD rocks! "Bring the Guitar" will make even the most reticent listener unable to resist singing along. "I Was Seven" is poignant and haunting. The inspirational title track, "Angels Near," captures so many aspects of NYC and encourages us to defy fear in spite 9/11. "Could It Be" gives voice to questions most of us have pondered but didn't dare express. "More" makes my heart soar along with Alice Marie's voice! This CD leaves me wanting to hear more from this extremely talented singer/songwriter. Truly an outstanding sequel to Equilibrium.
