"Sublime is one word to describe 'Alchemy',the second release from Vancouver BC- born singer- songwriter Alicia Dara. Like the steady pace of meditative breath, 'Alchemy' is an inner sojourn. Starting off with 'Animal', a hauntingly beautiful piano ballad, her singing reminds you that the voice, too, is an instrument critical to the composition of the song. The power behind her vocals is heard especially on 'In the Temple' as she sings: 'And the temple bells sing high above you'. More upbeat and catchy is 'Over My Bones(Archangel)', which is perfect fare for indie- pop radio. Unlike some vocalists whose voices are more showy and in- your- face, Dara's strength lies in it's subtle power as she ascends and descends effortlessly as an agile butterfly. 'Sacred rythm/ take me in your arms/ come and live through me', Dara sings over percussion in 'Raga', a song that evokes a soulful tone. Alicia Dara is a singer, songwriter, producer, performer and educator based in Seattle Washington. "Alchemy" is her third self- produced cd, released in June of 2001 on her own label, Stegosaurus Records.
"Alchemy"is a landmark recording that finds this artist at the top of her game, penning all twelve tracks and co- producing with Experience Music Project sound designer Brad Purkey.
Seven years, three cd's and countless live shows into her career, Alicia's talent has grown exponentially. Her haunting, atmospheric songs are often compared to those of Jane Siberry, Kate Bush, and Jeff Buckley. Her newest effort echoes the emotional intelligence and maturity of these artists.
"Alchemy" boasts some eclectic production, featuring Alicia's signature vocal purity. Sha also commands a wide range if instrumants, including guitars, flutes, and middle- eastern percussion.Also note the addition of the piano, whihc she learned to play especially for this record. What makes "Alchemy" so compelling is the grace and skill with which ALicia handles each of these sounds to create a unique sonic landscape. Her sense of melody is both fresh and timeless. She uses the full range of her voice, from the haunting chorus of "In the Temple" to the righteous spark of "Over My Bones (Archangel)". Her delicate piano work compliments the lovely piano ballads, "Ghost Story" and "I Keep Your Secret". SHe usues the riq, a small tambourine with a drum head, to summon the spirits of "Raga". Studio improvisations provided the basis for "Animal", "Zen Horses", and the title track, revealing that Alicia is not afraid to experiment with her own sound.
Alicia is an accomplished songwriter with a catalogue of over 300 songs. She has stdied her craft with Jackson Browne and Michelle Shocked, and has led numerous songwriter's workshops of her own in the US and Canada.
Since forming her label, Stegosaurus Records in 1997, Alicia has sustained worldwide internet distribution, and her cd's have sold in over a dozen countries. She also maintains a thriving web presence that continues to grow as fans spread the word about her remarkable talent.
