Jazztronica featuring Indian Tabla drums and acoustic jazz piano

notes

--Spacey Electronics with Exotic Rhythms --

"Their shit's trippy, funked-up and jazzilicious, laced with extra helpings of curry powder or double doses of chill-pill, depending on which way their galactically informed muses sway them."
Tom Cheney, The LA Weekly, June 11-17, 2004

If you have made it this far then you are truly someone with ears for a new sound, and you're in the right place.

Alien Chatter is the unexpected duo of Indian percussionist Satnam Ramgotra and keyboardist Rodney Lee. “Music for Aliens”, their debut release, is a sophisticated blend of atmospheric electronic textures and exotic rhythms. It’s an eclectic mix of Indian tabla drums, acoustic piano, synths, beatbox, spoken word in a primordial soup of electronics. The resulting experience is what happens when Massive Attack meets Tabla Beat Science and chill with the martians.

In the tradition of John McLaughlin, Shakti, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Zakir Hussain, and Talvin Singh, Alien Chatter is forging new ground with it's modern take on East meets West.

"When we began to work on this project, we totally let the music and our collective influences take over. We had no idea what the end result would be. So when we began playing the music for our friends we were blown away by the overwhelming positive response! I hope you enjoy the music as much as we enjoyed making it"

Love the energy! Love the way the styles and musical backgrounds interact so organically.

Really incredible, head clearing muse, glass of wine not necessary at the end of the day, recycle with this...! The vibration is excellent!

  • AAAAAAAA

The base for this music is the piano-trio (in this case a duo), then spiced up with eastern flavours (tablas, oud etc) and a psychedelic funk-groove - one of a kind.

Rodney and Satnam, you (and some previous comments) make me almost want to commute in L.A.! Yes, I wish it was just a commute to hear you guys play. It's a long way from Victoria, Canada. Could really imagine you playing here... next summer... Okay, snap out of it Eric. I am very glad that I bought this CD! I like your energy, both of you. You make me smile. You have two good CDs out now. I wrote a longer review a while back. I'll bring that over soon. Eric Porcher Photographic art, online music blog www.myspace.com/ericporcher

Satnam!! Never thought the tablas would have any connection to the piano! But it mixes well! Very creative! Good music to listen to when you feel like relaxing and it let's out the stress of school haha! Nice stuff, you enspire me to compose my own music like yours and your group Niyaz! I'll start on the piano now!

  • Alien Chatter makes driving around Los Angeles feel good!!!

Rodney and Satnam came together with major skills and musical touch to create Alien Chatter, real music. It is soulful, witty, exciting, mellow, very dynamic, and throughout it all, it has major groove. If you cant feel this music, you must be a zombie or something. Alien Chatter makes driving around Los Angeles feel good!!!

  • a cd that you'll be proud to own

A cool CD, definately worth adding to the collection for anyone who isn't genre-driven when it comes to music. The percussion is the stand out point for me, & I would definately be interested in other work by Satnam based on the strength of this CD. The only negative I would say is regarding the poems. I don't think they add to the tracks at all, the music already said it all & there's no sense in repeating yourself. All-in-all though a very enjoyable CD that's brimming with the kind of creativity that we don't see in the music industry nowadays.

  • excellent asian jazzy lounge

Groovy beats with driving-down-the-coast soundscapes .. jazzy piano-riffs & enticing tabla percussion. Can't wait for the second album!

  • Nice combination of styles
    author: William

I ordered this CD after reading an interview in NewAge Reporter with the band. The combination of jazz piano and tablas is nice, typically relaxing, and involving, without drifting into background music, while avoiding jazz cliches. I enjoy the instrumental pieces the best, as I find that the poems don't match the high level of creativity in the rest of the music.

  • Jazz/Electronica rolled up with traditional/classical South Asian beats
    author: Gaurav

Jazz/Electronica rolled up with traditional/classical South Asian beats is something we have all heard before, but it's rare to hear it done so well done, especially Stateside. You could, leave this album playing allowing it to be the melodious background music that soothes your night at home or, let it's haunting beauty wander all over your spine stimulating your body bit by bit. The utter lack of presumption combined with an unerring ability to lay out beats, where neither the East nor West takes over the other is a harmonious quality missing in most of this album's counter parts. Here the tabla isn't added as an afterthought, it holds its lead in the crowd yet allows the other instruments to have their moment to shine. This isn't the new age of fusion - you know "fusion for the sake of fusion" - this is two guys doing something that feels right to them and you hear it. Get the album! But, only if you want some of the best Electronified Jazz cooing in and out of you, cleansing every pore in your body.

I heard these guys on NPR. Unlikely combo of intruments that works really well. I love it.

  • Great chill out music
    author: Carolia

Great music to just chill. I enjoy both world and jazz music. This CD s a great blend of both worlds. Enjoy.

  • Alien Chatter is a great buy. Highly recommended all around.
    author: Jennifer

The combination of the jazz piano, the percussion and the vocals provides a great, easy-listening experience. The uniqueness of the combination gives some flare that other jazz compilations lack. I especially enjoy the songs where the tablas come out of the background.

  • Very cool listening
