I first saw Alison David in the Half Moon club in Cork, Ireland. I knew nothing about her. See was the support act that night. Just three or four songs but she still managed to steal the show that night. Three of those songs are on this album. Buy it for "All We Really Want" alone, a song so haunting you never want it to end. If there is any justice in this world you'll be buying a piece of musical history:)

Alison David – Believe (JustSoul CopyWritten 2005)
Alison David’s album is all her song’s she is most proud of put together. It’s a Jazz Acoustic set, with a few surprises. Her singing is unique and really fits acoustic sounds and real instruments; that can create an angelic sound to fit her gentle yet powerful voice. I hope that she releases a full acoustic album, because that where she shows her talent at her best. There are relations vocally to Joan Armatrading; it’s a haunting soulful voice. Alison captivates you with her acoustic songs; lyrically they are filled with creative freedom, and inspiration. Her talents shine on this superb album; it’s more of a scrapbook rather than an album. Alison told me that it’s a collection of her best songs, on one CD entitled ‘Believe’. The songs range from Acoustic, Dance to Funky Jazz numbers. Alison’s sound is mature and suitable for any one who understands real music. She keeps her uniqueness fresh through out with a new sense of freedom in each song. Lyrically, she writes from emotion to touch someone and inspire. They are real lyrics, far from being artificial. Alison David is an artist in touch with her spiritual side, which means she is human just like us, not carried away with the success of her music. Inspiration is high on this collection of gems, though there is only one song I dislike and that’s at the start. ‘Through The Rain’ its called, with a more trance sound, however vocally Alison sounds as good as ever. With her distinctive looks, colourful music, and imaginative words, ‘Believe’ takes you on a journey through her career. No Limit Records signed her a deal, and through this she is now ableto distribute her soul full of songs. Different, creative, and a long kept secret are a few ways to describe Alison David. The future is all that waits for her, which will provide us with some more music to add to a volume two collection, hopefully.

hard to pigeonhole and that’s what makes it so interesting

Like you may have guessed from Alison’s numerous guest appearences she isn’t limited to a certain music genre. In fact, her debut Believe is hard to pigeonhole and that’s what makes it so interesting. Alison takes you on a discovery tour into her musical world with her own blend of acoustic soul, neo soul, electro, downtempo, breakbeat and her personal lyrics.
Soul music fans will instantly like the folk-soul of I’m Gonna Find U (Bedroom Version), which finds Alison yearning for her soulmate accompanied by acoustic guitar. On The Way is another fine example that shows how much an acoustic song (again just a guitar and Alison’s voice) with thought provoking lyrics suits Alison. She also knows how to impress with just a piano on All We Really Want.
My God can best described as Alison’s interpretation of neo soul. With warm keys and Alison delivering a fine vocal performance this is one of my favourite songs on this album.
Another winner for soul music lovers is the groovy and hypnotic Keep Shining Like A Star.
Other inspiring songs include the jazz-breakbeat hybrid groove of 1 Last Look, the funky Really Doesn’t Matter with its hip-hop influenced beats or Alison’s collaboration with De Clive-Lowe and Dolby, the driving Respect 2 Hold On.
I must admit there are a few song that needed repeated listenings to get into like the downtempo Dreams Come True, which was also released as a single with remixes by the Afronaughts, Through The Rain or Til The End Of Time. But then these songs just show how versatile Alison’s music is and thus fit perfectly into the concept of the album Believe.
All in all a very promising and musical diverse debut album by Alison David with many strong songs.
