Boston area guitarist Allen Devine is renowned for his wildly-adventurous instrumental guitar based-albums so it's very cool to find that Devine's 2009 album is his first pop-based solo album. Featuring one toe tapping track after the next, POPORTUNITY spotlights Devine's guitar and vocals. Like many classic pop platters from the 60s,POPORTUNITY clocks in under a half hour, yet the ten tracks on hand combine for an uplifting pop adventure that combines smart songwriting balanced with Devine's famous guitar skills and his newly rediscovered vocal abilities. POPORTUNITY also features bassist Chuck Vath and U.K. drum legend Dave Mattacks. www.mwe3.com Robert Silverstein

Boston cat who ironically looks a lot like another guy, Mission of Burma's Clint Conley(well, like Clint looked 20 years ago) This is solid, likeable pop music in the Marshall Crenshaw vein. Nothing on here bowled me over BUT "Tonight" came real close! DAGGERZINE

Fortunately Devine's penchant for unforgivable puns is the worst thing about this offering of safe but perfectly catchy pop rock. True to it's title, POPORTUNITY offers up 10 songs of sugary pop complete with tangible nods to all the prerequisites. "It's On The Way" is perfectly Beatlesque with touches of the Beach Boys, while "She Told Me" packs a distinct power pop punch in the tradition of Big Star. And for the sake of mixing things up, Devine throws a few curve balls in there (the bluesy "My Baby Sezz")for good measure. But in the end it's a disc big on hook and melody, which is never a bad thing for any guitar rock fan with a pop fetish. (RYAN BRAY) The Noise

Pop Perfection

With POPORTUNITY, Allen Devine steps away from atmospheric instrumentals and into the realm of vocals and crisp, hook-driven melodies. A master of his craft, Devine has perfected the three-minute pop song. From the opening hard-hitting riffs of "What in the World," to the soft-spoken "Everybody Knows," the album displays his versatility. "She Told Me" is an instant radio-friendly rocker, while "My Baby Sezz" is accompanied by the rich tones of both a saxophone and a harp - just one of the many tracks to feature a special guest. With heartfelt lyricism and appealing arrangements, what's not to love? To put it simply, Devine shines on this record.
