Turkish-American songwriter ALPER brings you an exciting mix of Turkish pop and New Electronica. The upbeat title track “Söyleme” is ALPER’s first Turkish single and the first of its kind to have a buzz before its release. The much-anticipated song “Söyleme” is surrounded by the powerful new ballad “Aglarim” and three instrumental New Electronica tracks.
This is ALPER’s sophomore release following the successful debut of “Popular Lane”, which is also available here at CD Baby. “Söyleme” starts with “Aglarim”, which is best described as a song about nostalgia. While the literal translation of “Aglarim” is “I’ll cry”, it speaks to a wide generation of foreigners who have lived away from their motherland for decades. It starts simply with a confession of a yearning for a loved one’s presence and progresses into tears for the good memories.
Those tears are washed away quickly with the catchy introduction to “Söyleme”, which you can download as a ring-tone for free from ALPER’s website (www.bidbox.com). The title track “Söyleme” continues the theme of a yearning, but on a much lighter note. “Don’t ever say my name” is the translation of the main chorus and the song captures a refusal to hear a name after a broken relationship.
“Last Summer” is a soft transition into the New Electronica part of the album. It mixes Turkish and Arabesque melodies with Latin beats like a sweet piece of baklava with pina colada. The heavy drums on “Encore” simulate the push of adrenaline used as a strategy for motivation in the rise of the Ottoman Empire. It is layered with an acoustic piano for a modern fusion of classical Western European and Turkish sounds. As its name indicates, the last track of this album, “Moderate Obsession”, keeps you moderately obsessed with the thumping beats and the electronic sounds. It’s a club-oriented song with a snappy melody that makes you leave your worries behind and simply enjoy dancing to the beats.
ALPER’s second album “Söyleme” quickly transitions from a somber ballad to an exciting and fully energetic finale. While you may or may not understand the Turkish lyrics, “Söyleme”, with its evolving fusion of pop and melodic electronica speaks both, a truly unique as well as a universal language.
