Gentle L.A. - Rough, Pregnant, Warm & Stripped to the bone: Here they are...

ALSO's first home-made EP back then was a "spur-of-the-moment"-thing, in order to get some of the many songs on record and start out to play shows in the L.A. area; which makes this a very special collector item and spotlight on their beginning days.
Contrary to the follow-up EP and the rich, broad studio sound of the self-released debut ( see review to "It Was Fine To Be Kind") this might embody their most quiet and melancholic moments best.
What is there to say about "Also", other than what others haven't already said before: They truly are extremely special, unique and talented, if you're into the thoughtful, witty kinda stuff. D.C. = a gifted, memorable singer. And they are overseen, which makes them even more special. This record is probably their most intimate and most quiet, and at first it may be trickier to find access to it than to the others, for it's "bed-room-recording" appeal. For lovers of the warm, simple, lyrical and acoustic sounds this could even be an asset to get a copy of it. it has a very lo-fi and raw atmosphere, shuffling drums and deep natural bass sounds - but given fact that it's homemade it certainly means no reduce in audiophile pleasures and now less than ever a decrease in song quality: Proudly owning all of their records I can claim that there are some of the best songs on "Morning": the yearning "In One Lifetime", the ambient "Unloaded" (could be on a later Radiohead album), anti-hymn "Call It Funny" (one of my all-time favorite lyrics ever), the reminding "Take What's Yours" or the hopeless moody love-dependency song "Half Moon Eyes" (at least that's how I'd interpret it - by the way that one certifies all Jeff Buckley comparisons, it could have been on "Sketches For My Sweetheart, The Drunk" for) display a far spread of artistic jewels. Some may even find the simplicity in this more appealing and more delicate than anything else. There's elegy, there's mourn, there's beauty, there's morn-ing. Despite of my personal passion for the "en-room"-ambience, I am hopeful to see some of this songs re-recorded one day, so a broader audience can hear those hidden gems and future masterpieces, which shall not disgrace this piece of music at all! Try to get a real copy of it as soon as you can still find one. Unless there is something odd going on incessantly here, you will pay a bigger sum to get one some day. This is a sleeper.

It's a home recording but it still sounds pretty good.  The music is Raw and the sound is incredible.  I love the way Also did I Can't Shake This, and The Present.  These versions are a little different from the ones on their third cd.  I absolutely love the song Michael.  It reminds me of The Smiths, but Also has their own unique sound.  Drew sure can sing, his voice is Amazing.
