While the music of the Altamira Project is probably best described as a blend of world music and new age, it is in fact a series of contemporary originals that reflect the pure, open-minded and thoughtful musical approach of the two fine musicians behind the name, guitarist Gábor Olgyay and percussionist Aurél Holló.
The music is diverse and colorful like cave paintings – hence the title. You will hear traces of world music and contemporary compositions here, spiced up with Latin and Spanish rhythms and Hungarian folk music melodies. Yet the album is not eclectic at all. The listener is invited on a thoughtfully designed musical journey: The first few compositions are reminiscent of childhood – they are instantly likeable and easy to embrace. With its more complex musical textures and themes, the second part of the album represents the music of adulthood. It calls for more attentive and focused listening while the last third of the album is sophisticated, carefully crafted, pop-flavored music.
Gábor Olgyay is a self-taught musician who lives far away from the cities, seeking the harmony which radiates from his uniquely sounding compositions. He does not regard himself as a composer but as a constructive and persistent individual who strives for turning his musical ideas into reality.
Aurél Holló is a member of the world-renowned Amadinda percussion group. He is also a composer, a music teacher, a multi-talented musician who likes to play and write in various musical styles from contemporary music to state-of-the-art jazz-rock fusion. His compositions and musical arrangements are complex and elaborate, just as impeccable as his playing style.
