“Always In Christ”
In late 1996, a young group of junior high and high school students assembled to form a choir. The Church of the Nativity of Our Lord in Burke, Virginia, at the time had no youth choir, although the parish numbered well more than 2,000 families. Upon the announcement of the need for some contemporary music and the youthful voices and players to make it, 75 students signed up on the day of the announcement. They ranged in ages at the time from the 7th grade to high school seniors – about ages 13 to 18.
After just a handful of rehearsals, the first Sunday mass for the Nativity Youth Choir was January 5, 1997. And the rest, as they say, is history – the Youth Choir and its graduates in the Alumni Choir have provided music at Nativity every Sunday for more than ten years.
A number of our alumni members were present on those first Sundays in 1997. Others joined throughout the years, as they became eligible when they entered the 7th grade, or upon moving into the Northern Virginia area and discovering a group whose music they enjoyed and of which they wanted to be a part. Some of those then-7th-graders have now completed or remain in college and graduate school … and all along the way have continued their involvement in music at Nativity. And finally, we are joined this year by members of Nativity’s other choirs who share an interest in Contemporary Christian music.
“Sing His Song” commemorates two significant events: it is the culmination of a year-long celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Nativity Youth Choir (1997 – 2007), and it marks the debut of Nativity’s adult inspiration choir, now known as “AIC: Always In Christ”.
AIC’s members number some 50+ vocalists, band and ensemble players. 26 of the AIC 2007 roster appear on this recording. Over time, and the good Lord willing, it is our intent to capture on tape – (well, we don’t actually use “tape” any more – it’s all digital) – as many members of AIC as we can as their schedules permit.
The core vocal and band component of AIC resides primarily in Northern Virginia and has spent a good portion of this 10th Anniversary year at Roseland Studios recording some of what we consider to be our best material. The current plan calls for the release of two more commemorative CDs featuring songs from the extensive AIC song list developed over the past ten years, as well as an instrumental Interludes folio and a Christmas collection. Stand by for these future projects …
We hope you enjoy this collection of some of our favorites. Several of the songs on this album were among the first pieces of music studied and sung by the fledgling Nativity Youth Choir in those early months of 1997. Others are the songs chosen by our members when they were graduating high school seniors as their theme song in that graduation year. Nativity parishioners will find some old favorites, as well as some new songs that’ll surely become favorites, we hope.
Feel free to sing along with us, as we “Sing His Song”.
